Personally, I use these promo credits on items I know I definitely will not return, or things that cannot be returned like food and beverages, as the promo credit is non-refundable should you have to return the item.
Also, as a CYA I always take a screenshot of the promo text itself, the little green progress bar (showing you've added enough items to your cart to qualify) and your cart before you checkout. They're usually pretty good with these, but as there is no record in the order invoice, or your account, it's good to have the proof if you have to chat them for your credit (Has happened twice to me over the last 8-9 years).
