I find it interesting that you feel that way. When you compare the ultra watch to other Apple products it's actually one of their cheapest offerings. Everybody thought it was going to be $1000 or more.

Now to find out how good of a the ultra watch is you need to make a few comparisons first

If you compare it to other Apple watches that have

1. Sapphire glass crystal.
2. Cellular capability.
3. A premium metal enclosure.

Looking at Apple watches that give you those three things are typically $700 or more. Sometimes they have been over $1200.

$800 get you the most rugged damage resistant Apple Watch, with the longest battery, life, several additional features, and all of those things that I mentioned.

If you don't want any of those three things, I guess the value proposition is different
My calculus was that the larger titanium Apple Watch 10 would have been $749. This Ultra 2 at $689 has a better battery, improved ruggedness, brighter screen, and (imo) better band. The 10 has an insignificantly better chip, and better indirect viewing angle. Maybe the screen is also a millimeter bigger on the 10, too. Either way, I'll take the savings and better battery any day

Where do you get these watches that still have Apple warranty left on them?
My brother in law works for a company that finances consumer purchases. When a person decides that was a bad idea, they surrender the device and the company resells it. It's not an open to the public kind of thing.

Bummer, just bought one at Costco. It DID have the oxygen sensor enabled, but I'm not sure that's worth the $130 price difference.
I'm in the exact same boat. I might just keep this. Curious. Is this a hassle to return to Costco ?

Definitely one of those items that if you use it to its full potential and take advantage of everything it does offer, $800 isn't overpriced at all. There are a lot of people who would be more suited to own a Series 8/9/10 but paid twice that for an Ultra for features they could easily do without.
Agreed. My ultra i got at launch day and is at 96% battery health still vs my wife who has been through 2 phones since then for roughly the same 'all in' amount but couldn't get full fay of charge vs ultra thats 2+

My iPhone 14 is at 83%. Watch series 7 is 92% launch day.

I'll say this. Their battery degradation % leaves a lot to be desired. My actually battery life is closer 50%.

If you're a healthy person, you don't need a blood oxygen sensor. It's always roughly the same and what are you going to do with the information? Go get an oxygen bottle if it's a little low?
Yeah I always wondered about how relevant this actually is. Never heard of blood oxygen levels until COVID, and never heard about them since the main pandemic ended. Googling around I can kind of understand the use case (but still don't know what you'd do with this data) - I get Apple is going in the direction of a one stop medical device, but I really wonder how many people actually think this feature is useful, like one day Apple will be able to tell me exactly in nanometers how fast my back hair grows with dynamic real time visualizations powered by AI... but do I really care?

Some Ultra 2s do have the sensor. For instance you can still get them new from Costco with the sensor for $100 more - https://www.costco.com/apple-watc...18736.html [costco.com]. If the MPN ends in LL/A it has it enabled, LW/A it doesnt.

Personally I just went the used route. Found one with the sensor and 100% battery in good condition and saved a couple hundred bucks
where did u buy the used one from ?
