Some Ultra 2s do have the sensor. For instance you can still get them new from Costco with the sensor for $100 more - https://www.costco.com/apple-watc...18736.html. If the MPN ends in LL/A it has it enabled, LW/A it doesnt.
Personally I just went the used route. Found one with the sensor and 100% battery in good condition and saved a couple hundred bucks
I have the Ultra 1 and absolutely love it, and I don't see a need to upgrade to a Ultra 2 or the new black one and I want to upgrade but there hasn't been much improvement or new features to justify the cost difference of a Ultra 1 vs Ultra 2 IMO. You are likely to get better deals especially if you are willing to go refurbished/renewed or used. (Ultra 1 Renewed is $499 on Amazon right now)
The main new features you get with Ultra 2 are:
Double tap gesture support
On-device Siri with health access
Precision finding for iPhone
Hardware differences on the Ultra 2 vs. 1
1000 extra nits brightness on the Ultra 2
S9 Chip (vs S8 on Ultra 1)
64gb storage (vs 32gb on Ultra 1)
Gen 2 Ultra Wide-band chip (gen 1 on Ultra 1)
72 hours of battery life in low power mode (vs 60 on Ultra 1)
Ultra 1 would have Blood Oxygen if made and not refurbished before 2024 (from my understanding)
Not a noticeable difference in any way to 99% of users.

It's really difficult to believe this came from Target but it did. Attachment 16220928
Wow, pictures of screws instead of screws?!!
Was this supposed to be a new watch or refurbished? Did that come in an authentic looking Apple box?
How in the world does that get mixed in to Target's stock that supposedly comes from Apple I'm assuming?
Di they take it back/replace without hassle? I'm assuming their first thought would be that you're trying to return a fake one after receiving the real one.

I contacted Apple about it. The serial number on the box had been registered about 16 months prior to my purchase. Target was selling as new in a factory sealed box. The watch was not a working fake. It was not able to turn on or charge when connected to the charger and the watch band got stuck and wouldn't release.
Don't know if I should get the $449 ultra 1 refurb from Amazon, eBay refurb ultra 2 that got mentioned here for $539 or a new ultra 2 on Amazon. Upgrading from series 5

I got the ultra 1 from Amazon. Looks new with original band and apple charger.

I went ahead and got the New AWU2 from Amazon though I was tempted by the AWU1 refurb as well. I view these high end smartwatch purchases as a long-term investment where I had a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro for five years and would have kept using it for at least another year or two had it not gotten lost/stolen this summer.
I went for this deal for a few reasons. Firstly, the AWU2 actually does seem to get better real-world battery life than the AWU1 with a more efficient SIP, coming from Garmin the AWU battery life is already really weak so I wanted every last bit. Secondly, the newer SIP will likely be supported by new WatchOS releases for at least 1-2 additional years and the on-watch Siri is much faster which makes it actually useful.
The mixed reviews and the guaranteed 85% battery life scared me off the eBay refurb. A few reviews said the included strap and charger were not original and a real Apple strap+charger would easily cost $150 if you were to buy them new. Even if the watch comes with 90% instead of 100% battery health, that's probably an extra year of battery wear that is worth $100 to me as I want this watch to last me 5-6 years (or 3-4 with solid trade-in/resale value).

Inspired by the refurb comments, I ordered both from Reebelo and eBay. The Reebelo one came in the original box, flawless with all accessories and warranty until July 7, 2025. The eBay one came flawless as well, but with just the watch, band, and some kind of Non-Apple charger. Happy with the Reebelo one and I'm sure the warranty comes hit or miss.

I ordered an AWU2 from Reebelo also. Kept it and returned the refurbed premium (or whatever they call it) one from Amazon since it was a savings of just under $200 after taxes.
The one from Reebelo looked new to me and had 100% battery life, along with the OEM Apple Watch band and charger. I didn't even open the Amazon box and just returned it in the sealed Amazon box after testing out the Reebelo one for a few days to make sure nothing was wrong with it.
Mine just arrived today in a generic cardboard box: looks brand new, 100% battery, OEM strap and USB-C charger, still has AppleCare with 23 days to add AC+, and is a blood oxygen model.
Obviously we'll see how it holds up but first impressions are great.

Same, just got mines. Not a single scratch, 100% battery health, still has O2 Enabled, and purchase date with Apple shows October 2025 with some time to add applecare but they also bring that 1 yr Warranty from ebay

If you read the reviews there are complaints about fakes and honestly I didn't believe it till I got one.
Target took it back and I bought an Ultra 2 from Best Buy.
