I've not owned this one but I do own an Opal 2 and am on my 3rd replacement in a year and a half. I'm diligent about cleaning it and while it's great that GE has provided me with a new unit each time that it has failed, it's quite the hassle to swap it out each time. While we like the ice that it makes, with such a high failure rate I'm not sure I would choose to buy it again.

You bring an ice maker with you to a hotel? What other interesting things do you do?

I got this last time, and i can honestly say it's not loud at all. Maybe if i keep my ear next to it, but i barely hear it while in the kitchen. It does work really well and its one of the cheaper ones.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all I hear about these consumer-grade nugget ice makers are headaches. Almost got an opal a couple years back, huge fan of the chewable ice, but I'm really glad I didnt. At least until I find a machine without the breakdown issues and ideally better against mold.

Costco has a Frigidaire nugget ice maker, it works okay and in the 8mo or so I had it it didn't get any mold (I did clean it every other week or so). I ended up returning it because it was way too loud and the woman wouldn't let me keep it plugged in anymore, but if you had a place that didn't matter it'd be fine.

I own an Igloo brand ice maker that I've had for years (6 to 9?) and it's been rock solid though I only use it a few days per year (usually bring for multiple night stays at one hotel - if the hotel machine runs out of ice or is broken or you don't feel like walking to it, it comes in pretty handy). This isn't the same Igloo model I have but it's listed as $119.99

Can't justify $600 for the GE ice maker but this is worth a shot at $150.

My Frigidaire was so noisy I turned it off.

Be prepared that when they fail, you most likely are not allowed to legally dispose of it in the regular trash, but instead will have to bring it to e.g. a landfill where you'll have to most likely pay a fee (in my case $20) to dispose of it due to the refrigerant... But I suspect most will just illegally dump them in their trash. Mine lasted barely 2 year (different brand though).

Looks like an $80 ice maker. Not sure how this is a deal at $149.
