An ATM card can't be used for online purchases, and cannot be used without your PIN, making it more secure. It can still be used to pay in many (but not all) brick-and-mortar stores, provided their reader handles ATM pay.
I know most debit cards have fraud protection, but that protection is different from credit cards in one important way. You don't ask for fraud protection on a debit card until the fraudster has already cleared you out.
On a credit card, you haven't paid them yet. That is a much better position to be in.
If I do this, I'll make the 15 transactions, then shred the card.
Now banks push the debit card because they make more money on them, and don't even tell you an ATM card is an option.
Sometimes, when I've asked for an ATM card, they argue with me and tell me the debit card is an ATM card (which is true - it's both). Then you have to tell them you do not want Visa or Mastercard on it.
Kinda makes me want to take advantage of them a litte.
