I have one of these. The remote display is pretty handy even working inside a panel. Its nice to be able to stick it at eye level and not worry about having a good spot for the meter body. The display also has a powerful magnet on the back so it sticks to subpanels/panel doors/etc. Range is pretty decent as well. I was able to leave the body hooked up on the shop floor and go all the way back into our office area (100+ft away through walls) and it still worked. No idea on battery life as its used sparingly, haven't had to replace the batteries yet.

I use both. I save my expensive multimeters for precision work that requires high accuracy, a fast update, 1000A range, or odd waveforms. For everyday use I have a few $20 to $50 multimeters around. I find a cheap 20,000 count (4 1/2 digit) is often more useful than an expensive 6,000 count multimeter like this one.

My Fluke 177 was literally run over by a truck and it still works. Had to replace some of the plastic parts and 1 screw mount doesn't hold, but otherwise its perfect.

Because someone asked how this compares to a cheapo $20 meter. Most people using this for DIY at home will never need a fluke or a remote display. Remove display would be only for clamping inside very high exposed voltage, closed, and you have to view it from outside to monitor for tracing issues. You will never need this in a residential application so no need to waste money on it. If you want an 800hp car, you'd already know what you want and need.

That's fine but you don't often run over your meter, and dkuring $20 sales, you can get 10 meters to run over.

The one single reason Fluke are so expensive is that they are >50% USA made, thus falling into domestic made product, eligible for supply along government contracts.
There are plenty of other brands out there that have better design, functionality and manufacturing for a fraction of that price.
Don't waste your money on Fluke. You already have through your taxes.

I would not trust a single one of those to not blow up in my face let alone give me accurate readings.

Agree. I have a good Fluke for when I need something accurate that is well maintained and kept in a case. I have a $40 craftsman in my drawer for when I need to just check basic continuity or standard household voltages that doesn't need to be precise.

Much more robust. Will last way longer. Also they have more features and better accuracy.
Furthermore I have yet to see a generic model with the ability to detach the display.
