Unless the chip factory burns down again, so far they're 2 for 3

Would this be good for an XBox Series X as an external drive with a suitable enclosure?

basically what SLC/MLC/TLC/QLC means is how much storage each cell manages. The pro about having a cell manage more storage is well, you get more storage, on the flip side, each cell works harder for each part of the nand it has to address, lowering each cells individual life cycle.

So while QLC (quad level cell) can have more storage than a TLC(tri level) and such, the total effective TBW(terabytes written) of a same storage QLC drive is effectively lower than a TLC one. Similar to Dram which helps minimize constant writing on cells to extend drive longevity, not using QLC will increase longevity.

Since the drive is both QLC and dramless, its designed for workloads that are write minimal and storage heavy. Examples would be as secondary storage for games, pictures, and movies, and you aren't typically writing onto the space constantly (e.g work loads, OS)

That's is true, great point. Teamgroup makes two versions of this drive both using the MaxioTech MAP1602A Falcon Lite controller, both dram-less but the MP44Q is the QLC version. The regular MP44 uses a TLC NAND flash. People should be aware because if one takes a cursory glance they look the same, but they aren't.

QLC drives write slower than TLC drives, but they're cheaper, especially for larger storage sizes. QLC is less durable than TLC. They also generally slow down when you fill them past 80% capacity or so.

DRAM is cache and can mean faster reads and faster writes, especially for large amounts of data.

For a casual user, a lot of that won't be too noticeable, but if you're often moving large amounts of data, then you'll definitely notice. QLC and DRAM-less aren't great for main OS drives, but it could be fine for storing movies or games, for example. That said, if you play games that write a lot of data, then you can end up with delays.

As with most things, there are tradeoffs, and just it depends on how you want to use it. It might be worth considering the MP44, which also doesn't have DRAM, but is TLC, for $15 more.

It will work fine, I got a $129 4tb m.2 drive from Amazon about a year ago and it's been great.

The comments about qlc and dram won't matter too much for a gaming drive since you don't write to it too often and the qlc speeds should be just fine (I think this drive is slightly faster than the drive I've been using)

Thanks so much for explaining!

So SLC means single level cell, I'm assuming, and MLC means multi or dual?

Which of the options (and/or DRAM) do you suggest for a PS5?
