The companion pass qualifying points reset each Jan 1....so you want to have all your large batches of points hitting in the same calendar year.
That is why people will get this card today and delay the finishing of the '$3,000 spend' until early Jan, so they can then get the 85,000 bonus points in January and continue to work the points system to complete the companion pass in 2025
P.S. Another misconception is that you have to 'use up points for' or 'pay for' a companion pass. If you get the 135,000 qualifying companion points in a calendar year (and you get 10,000 free at year startup if you have a credit card), you don't 'pay for the pass'. It's a free perk. You still have those 100,000+ points in your account to use for flights.
In my experience, Chase seems to consider the account still open through the statement close date.
Same, mine shows "Offer ends 10/17/2024"
I have only one spot remaining for this year
I also wonder how SWA is going to treat these 'perks' like early bird checkin and early boarding (A1-A15) after reserved seating hits midyear 2025.

If I apply for a business card now also, do I do the same thing and wait until January to hit the bonus? Or can I hit that bonus first this year and then the non-business bonus in January?

I'm assuming points are awarded on statement date.
It appears I have a due date of the 17th and a statement date of the 20th (28-day grace period?).
I want a statement date before the 10th as I'm plan a large payment around that date.
Would I be correct in choosing a due date some time between the 1st and 5th?
