While not the sequel to Chrono Trigger that everyone wanted, I still very much enjoyed the game. It was fun collecting all the characters and trying different combinations. The battle system is very unique. The music is, of course, amazing. This remaster worked very well for me on ps5. Having trophy support is fun, too.

100%. They put about the absolute minimum effort other than the polygon and portraits being redone. The fmvs look quite shite which is a damn shame bc they were very cool back in the day.

The static backgrounds seem nearly untouched

Don't waste your money on this not a sequel. What Square, why?!?
A little late to the complaint department, they made this 25 years ago.

What was the docked issue?
They did fix the awful framerate during battles.

It's more of a port than a remaster.

While fans of the 16-Bit "Chrono Trigger" often dislike this game for not being a direct sequel, the devs wanted to do something new (which may resonate with people who are tired of endless sequels and… remakes) and this 32-bit tale still has an amazing tale to tell of its own. I also particularly like the music; I listened to the album several times on road trips or at work before I ever played the game.

Unfortunately, it's a weird type of remaster, not a remake. Know going in that the characters are PS1 polygon models which scale up with the remaster's resolution, but the pre-rendered backgrounds weren't re-made from the original or newly made drawings. Instead, the backgrounds were made to look less pixelated by blurring the edges of the pixels, but that just makes them look soft and a bit smeared, standing in sharp contrast to the polygon models which are no longer blocky but so high-res that they stand out separate from the background.

If you can get past the low effort remaster, and stop comparing it to the 16-bit first entry into the series, you'll find a story that is actually quite interesting, beautiful color direction and style, amazing music, and overall a game worth playing either remastered or original.

Agreed. I just think of it more like an upscale port than a remaster. They really didn't do much graphically. It was still wonderful to play through.
