30A with 10-3. IMO, a mini split might cost 500 or 1000$ but a 1200 btu unit will use around 8A. Long term you are going to save on energy, and short term you save on wire. Plus you get AC for the summer

Bought one for this winter. I'm getting a sub panel installed unrelated to this, eventually want to get a mini split but this will be nice to use in the meantime. Now I can worry about it next summer.

What about running a wire to the dryer outlet, duplicate the plug type of the dryer. Then unplug dryer, when wanting heat in garage? My run would be about 15'. Is this possible?

I know they have splitters for electric vehicle charging, so both cannot be active at the same time. Might have to go that route too.
Yeah, wood working shops have a switch to pick which equipment to power. So 220v only flows to one device. That being said lots of state have dumb code to protect against the bottom 1% that mess up and ruin it for the rest of us.

It should work. I might do the same thing as a temporary measure. I sometimes use the dryer outlet to charge my EV if I need faster speed. This heater should use only around 22 amps

How cost efficient would this be to run at a low temp in a garage during the winter, just to keep from freezing. We have a garage that would rarely be opened, and stores a pontoon boat, jetski, and riding mower. I'm wondering if this would be too expensive to run just to prevent freezing temps.
Depends on which climate zone you're in and if the garage is insulated. Assuming insulated and say, minnesota -- you're going to spend hundreds per winter running this thing

Once it gets cold enough the heat pump ain't going to work anymore. Then you save lots of money by not running it.

This is probably a 4 wire 240 right - ground+neutral? I just put in a 3 wire 50A in my garage for a welder and plasma cutter last week. What will I ever need a 4 wire outlet for out here, I asked myself.

edit: oh yea, the fan is probably 120V - I bet it is a 4 wire.

How many square feet/cubic feet can this thing heat roughly? Can it heat a 3 car garage that's about 700 square feet with 8 foot ceilings?
5000 watts produces approximately 17060 BTU's. If you live in a reasonably warm climate it may be enough. Heating a garage is NOT like heating a house. I have an attached 3 car garage and am in Michigan. My garage is slightly larger than yours. My heater is natural
gas forced air. 145,000 btu. To warm it from 20 to 70 takes about 1/2 hour. It is very well insulated and top of the line doors

No, you can do it with 10-2, but code requires a common, that may go unused

I have the floor version of this in a 30X30 insulated metal building and it kept my shop above 40 when the outside temps were all the way down to 18 last winter (which is cold for us in the deep South.) I keep my boat inside for this exact reason. If this were in stock down here I would buy it without hesitation so I would have two units running. I don't care what the power bill is as it's microscopic compared to a replacement engine or outdrive.

Yeah, yeah, first world problems ;-)

Sounds very accurate, insulated building, 22 degree temp gain. Not opening the door. Warm climate.

That's true of old heat pumps. Check out the specs of some of the new ones. They can still be more efficient than traditional electric heaters well below freezing.

Would you have to jumper ground+common on the heater, or would it only have 3 connections? I'd only use it periodically and would put an extension cord to that 50A plug.

Why can't a boat get frozen? Is there water trapped in the system or something?
