The one review on Lego's website for the 8-stud storage bin makes it seem like the actual storage space inside is not that much. They complain about raised base and have a picture showing about 1.5" of height for actual storage inside.

The large ones (and maybe the small ones; I'm not sure) have circular holes in the bottom where lots of little legos will get stuck. It's really annoying. For those with a 3d printer there's a model available freely on thingiverse that fills in these holes. Highly recommend if you are going to buy this.
