Note that the previous thread on this has a massive amount of technical discussion about practically every aspect of this router and detailed setup instructions etc. If looking for answers, I'd start with a search in that thread (terms like OpenWRT, DD-WRT, stock, CA, mesh, USB, throughput, wired, backhaul, bricked, etc). That may be a good start for those new to it, as it probably already answers a lot of questions that are sure to crop up.

Also, here's a link to some of the basic support docs for it from the Linksys site …

That's why you flash openwrt and all it takes is a grand total of not more than 15 minutes. No brainer deal and I already ordered my 4th. Lol
Are there step by step instructions how to do this anywhere? I'm not very tech savvy..

Curious to pick someone's brain. I bought 4 of these, initially to set up one parent and 3 child nodes. Now I've realized I have 2 distant rooms that have Ethernet jacks connected to a switch. Instead of the original plan, can I set up 1 as parent, 2 on Ethernet as APs and 1 as mesh? I read on a reddit post that seeing up as APs is much more preferred vs mesh and smoother handoff when switching from Ap to AP vs on mesh.

Or is it not even with it to over complicate and just do 1 parent, 3 AP as initially planned?

Do you know how to mangle TTL on DDWRT? I have done it on this unit with OpenWRT but I do prefer the DD-WRT interface.
sorry. My routers has not been shipped, no idea now.

I have Google nest (non pro). Can I use this Linksys as the primary and then use my Google nest points as boosters?

If you are on stock, you can set up one parent and 3 child nodes. Connect the nodes that have access to ethernet with cable, so not further configuration needed for those. The nodes will decide which connection to use.

Am I able to do 1 parent, 2 child on Ethernet, and 1 child on wireless? And any special configurations for the one on wifi vs the Ethernet?

Yes you can have a mix of wired and wireless child nodes in the mesh. There is no special configuration needed, just follow the instructions already posted for adding the child nodes via the CA menu.

I have been using it on T-Mobile home internet. Connect the T-Mobile Ethernet port to the Linksys Internet port. I turned off the 5ghz SSID on the T-Mobile router using the T Life app on my phone. Could not turn off the 2.4ghz band so I changed the SSID to end with "T" so my devices would know not to connect to it. Running one Parent and two wireless nodes in stock FW mesh. You get a double NAT and CGNAT from T-Mobile so port forwarding and running a VPN server is not working. The problem with cellular home internet is you need to put your receiver/router at a corner or side window of your house to receive the best cell signal. The other side of your house has a hard time getting a good WiFi signal. By using Ethernet wired to a router in the center of your house or 2 Linksys in wireless mesh gives you much better WiFi throughout your place.
Thanks for the reply. Can you explain this "Running one Parent and two wireless nodes in stock FW mesh." a bit more?

I am planning to use the TMobile home internet + 1 or 2 of these Linksys routers. Is that what you mean by one Parent and wireless node?

You can't mix them for mesh, just buy three if needed

From what I understand, these have two partitions and can have two different firmwares loaded and boot to either one you choose (kind of like a dual-boot computer setup). What you might want to consider is just switching to boot the other partition with stock firmware (assuming you didn't flash both partitions). That would allow you to go back and play with OpenWRT again later if you choose.

I believe that the procedure to switch between using the first / second partitions is to power-cycle the device three times with about a 5-second delay between them. My understanding is that this is kind of a fail-safe in case one partition becomes corrupted, then it automatically switches to using the other partition if it fails to boot up three times in a row. So the triple power-cycle (allowing it to start the boot process for 5 seconds but not finish loading) three times essentially sends the signal to use the other partition (and would be unlikely to be accidentally triggered that way under most circumstances). However, I believe that someone also mentioned it might take 4 or 5 power-cycles instead of 3 (possibly just an issue of getting the timing for the on/off cycle right).

I haven't started playing with them yet, so I'm not positive of all this, but that has been my understanding based on some of the posts from the previous thread. Some of the users more experienced with it can chime in if I've misinterpreted some of this.

Also, I think someone in the previous thread stated that holding the reset button for 30 seconds might automatically flash it back to stock firmware (although I don't recall seeing that discussed much and I don't know if that's accurate or if using the reset button might just be a way to reset your setting / configuration changes). Normally, I would suspect that a reset would just reset the config and not firmware, but not sure here.

I just picked up my 4th, and I haven't set any up yet. I just got Quantum Fiber with a W1700K (wifi7) router. I want to use these Linksys as a mesh system to cover both floors and yards.

What is the best way to set this up? I'm open to OpenWRT if necessary, or whatever will be the most reliable and effective setup. Thanks in advance!
