Note that the previous thread on this has a massive amount of technical discussion about practically every aspect of this router and detailed setup instructions etc. If looking for answers, I'd start with a search in that thread (terms like OpenWRT, DD-WRT, stock, CA, mesh, USB, throughput, wired, backhaul, bricked, etc). That may be a good start for those new to it, as it probably already answers a lot of questions that are sure to crop up.

Also, here's a link to some of the basic support docs for it from the Linksys site …

If you're so pumped with ddwrt, I'm not sure what will really happen if you try openwrt... The interface is fluid and adjusts according to the screen size and there are a myriad of great features.

Yes, openwrt has a dark interface as well. 😂
From what I've read just several days ago it seems like the OpenWRT is way sketchier than the DD-WRT build. I've only heard of people bricking with OpenWRT but not with DD-WRT with this router. I'd rather stay away until the people putting it all together figure out how to make one definitive version. It sounds like an "alpha" build while DD-WRT being in beta. I'll let others figure it out. DD-WRT is better than stock so that's good enough for me.

I'm flashing my routers to DD-WRT. First time using it. Super simple to do. Way better than stock firmware. It is very zippy/fast, and has way more features.

BUT I have made an important discovery. Stop what you're doing. Follow along and read...

Inside DD-WRT. Click the Administration tab then click the Management tab. Scroll down until you see a section called "Web UI Styles" click the bubble next to "Enable Dark Styles" to enable that feature. Apply the setting and save. Your GUI is now in dark mode. My eyeballs are saved... and yours too! YOU'RE ALL WELCOME!

The killer feature. No way I'd ever use stock firmware after that.
Try the Dark Reader extension for chrome [google.com] or firefox [mozilla.org]; your eyes will thank you Wink

Oh, I have it already. It's a beautiful thing for sure. Dark mode everything. No white screens ever. This is the way. 😉

An 'alpha' build? Lol

Qosmio's NSS tree is as stable as it can get and have been building the tree and using for the past several weeks... Let me put it this way: I don't even need 1 but ended up buying 5 because of qosmio and openwrt! Lol

My analysis paralysis:

1. Stock: Corolla

2. Ddwrt: Accord

3. Openwrt: BMW 5 Series

Hope you catch my drift 😜

Practically no one is using OpenWRT here. Everyone is using DD-WRT (Tesla) and OpenWRT is the outdated BMW that boomers like because it reminds them of the time when BMW was relevant. 🤫😂

I've read the reddit page of this Linksys MX4300 for OpenWRT and it's a mess. People can't get the wifi to work, let alone mesh. People are talking about following guides and it's still not working right. It's a mess. No thanks.

Ignorance is a bliss. That's my LAST, I mean my very LAST point on this topic. Enjoy! 😍

Found this helpful for folks that want to use this router with an existing installed Velop system that is not compatible with this router. Will try it sometime today while doing MILTON prep!

DD-WRT hasn't had a release they call stable since 2008! It's perpetual beta. OpenWrt has stable releases about once a year with more frequent maintenance (bug fix) releases. Which is more sketchy?

DD-WRT is more all-in-one firmware. OpenWrt is more barebones by default with packages to install additional features. I think that added step to install additional packages puts a lot of people off. For example, the nightly snapshots don't even have a webgui by default (the stable and maintenance releases do of course!).

I just needed to say this router GREATLY exceeded expectations. Tested the old Asus router before I installed this one from the furthest corner of our house and was getting around 80 Mbps max - this Linksys device immediately took things to 400 Mbps. Insane.

Most impactful $15 technology purchase I've ever made on here. Thank you SD and thank you Woot.

If you are planning on plugging a usb hard drive or a usb only printer into the usb port of the router and running the file or printer server from the router itself then no. The usb port is disabled and there's no file or print sever software on the stock firmware. Would need to install ddwrt or openwrt.

If using a NAS or something else with it's own file/media server already and you are just connecting it via ethernet or wifi to the router then of course it should work. Same if you are connecting a printer via wifi or ethernet.
Thanks for the reply. Well, kinda stinks they disable the usb port as I will looking forward to using. I will likely get mesh working on stock FW and go from there.

It seems ppl are saying that DD-WRT or OpenWRT are having mixed results with mesh?

Many new users flooded in because of the deal, with zero experience on openwrt and linux...and did the flash based on some random old guide.

I don't care, openwrt works great here.

So shouldn't a better guide exist? Why is DD-WRT so well explained and detailed on what to do and OpenWRT is like: "Here's a weblink to github. Figure it out yourself, noob". That was my initial impression. I tried figuring out what was necessary and it seemed like I needed to read a novel/textbook worth of information with no direction to where that information is. Useability is so critical to adoptability.

In general, OpenWRT isn't really targeting anyone except people who know a lot about this stuff, partly because the only people who really need a solution like OpenWRT are people who know a lot about this stuff.

In general, though, OpenWRT instructions are pretty good once the router is fully supported in a main release. The instructions will get better.

Also, parts of OpenWRT are IMO easier than DD-WRT. I wanted to build custom packages for OpenWRT a while back, and it was easy to just replicate a CI workflow on Github and build my package. I haven't tried to do the same on DD-WRT, but a cursory glance doesn't find as good of documentation for building custom packages on DD-WRT. It seems like the instructions are mostly assuming that you can just find the packages you want.

I set up the mesh via the wiki. The two satellites disconnect randomly and then reconnects pretty frequently. Anyone else having this issue?

Relocated the Ethernet cable from the WAN port to the 3rd LAN port and the connection switched from WiFi to wired in the app. It's been 24 hours and it's stable so far.
