Using a planer to replace a jointer is a huge hassle though. Yes, it can be done - but it's always a little janky, especially with long boards. And it requires you to make jigs and other things. If you've got the space and money, a jointer is absolutely worth having.

At least the weight alone guarantees it's not going to get stolen.

I guess you don't have a wood shop in Trenton.

I usually prefer to buy, restore, and upgrade stuff that pre-dates the 1970s move toward cut corners and plastic, but got the Grizzly version of this and the 20" planer used from a guy who was downsizing to some shopsmith stuff he bought from me. It's been surprisingly good.

I had 2 jointers and got rid of both. You just don't need one if you have a planer. $2500 is a lot to pay for a tool that is almost totally unnecessary. Useful, but unnecessary.

How do you get a true flat edge with only the planer successfully?

You can use a straight edge and a pattern router bit. I had a long piece recently and used my track saw because of the pronounced bow.

I have this jointer and in general it has been fantastic. Quiet operation, great dust/chip collection. I did have a cap blow on it, but grizzly sent a replacement without any question.

As Zirconium noted, it is easier on shorter boards. Most of my boards are not more than 60". But I have a 60" jig for my planer. Jig - well, just a flat board (MDF). I place the warped board on the MDF and put shims under any high spots. This prevents the planer from flattening the board (and keeping the warp). Once the planer flattens the top, flatten the other side the same as you'd do for any board just off a jointer.

For edge straightening I used another jig that holds the board straight (using clamps) while I make a table saw pass.

Depends what you are doing. If you are doing true precision work where actual flat matters, no it is not unnecessary. Even with the long board trick, which is a pain in anyways, there are limits. You're not gonna get perfectly flat out of any guide board or anything less than an unmanageable heavy piece of steel.

I have this jointer, it's a nice tool. The selling points are helical cutter, which is great because each cutter has 4 sides so you get 4 sharpens for one set of cutters, super easy to adjust depth of cut, and this is about as cheap as you can get for a 76" table which really you need that length for a jointer to do its job well. Dust collection is excellent as well, its actually my least messy tool.

The only downside to this tool is the "mobile base". It's better than nothing but it really doesn't move easily. Fine for occasional use but if your shop is smaller and you are constantly moving it, it's completely inadequate. I ended up putting it on an all-swivel base, which works great, but you'll be out at least another $150 doing so.

I had to look back, I picked this up on sale for $1950 (plus the same $289 freight) in august 2023. I had been eying jointers for awhile leading up to this. For the features this is about as good a price you'll get for this level tool. If it's on your list I'd go for it.

To each their own, but since buying a (much smaller, pre-owned) Jet 48ish inch jointer, I now buy 'rough' boards at the lumber yard for ~30% less money and mill them myself. This pays for itself on large projects (think entertainment centers, large dining tables, etc.). I managed to joint 10' pieces of maple and walnut on the Jet, but it was a roller stand nightmare. Could've used this thing.

I wouldn't even dream of this thing for medium sized projects. I can understand ditching a floor jointer if you have limited space and no large projects, or if you can get by with a router table / table saw jig or similar for stuff under 4'. When I finally get that near-retirement-shop though, this thing would be sweeeeeeet. One day. Hopefully someone's already there.

I have this but a grizzly brand... It's great. Beats the heck out of the dove tail jointers.

A jointer is invaluable for getting boards square, especially long boards. I've used jigs/pattern bits/tracksaw and while they can work, it's finicky and I wouldn't want to replace a jointer in my shop. Great deal on a helical jointer.
