My wife was hospitalized for 3 weeks a few months back, right at the end of the school year (she's a teacher). She's OK now, but at the time it was absolutely exhausting having my own day job, shuttling around our 4 kids to school and their activities, making sure everyone was fed ON TOP OF going to the hospital every day for 2-3 hours, usually at the end of the day, leaving around 9 PM. Coincidentally for that entire time I noticed that not only did I get a sense that I slept better, but my Samsung watch was giving me 90+% scores for sleep the entire time. Basically, being physically *and* emotionally exhausted seems to have been the key.
I had reconstructive surgery on my shoulder and the last 2 months my spouse has helped so much! Had no idea, has to sleep in another room, as I haven't slept much. Finally, I thought to take a Natrol 5 mg melatonin last night. Worked too well. Overslept this morning, but I will try 3 mg Natrol next.
Also maybe consider getting a fitness watch like Fitbit or Apple watch. While these are designed for activity many of them also monitor sleep, they can give you an idea of what your sleep really looks like and sometimes doctors just need to have a visual of what you're talking about as opposed to saying I don't sleep well. Good luck.
Minimal screen time before bed helps, but the mask helps keep things dark and that has done more for my sleep than anything else so far (up there with streaming rain sounds or other sleep noise stuff).
