Sure, you might catch one on a bad day, or one with an authority complex... but you might be surprised how much respect and cooperation might net you. I've been let off with a warning MANY times.

I own the R7 and the range is amazing. The R8 app just lets you easily customize the settings.. you can still customize settings on the R7 as well manually on the device itself or with the software.

I'm sure it's helpful, I just don't think the pure functionally of the R8 over the R7 is that different. I have an R7 in my wife's car and it's an amazing radar and I've always just manually gone through radars and changed settings.

Would you pay $170 more for the app functionality alone? Or are there more features that's worth the price premium?

Exactly, one thing that I also used but I don't think will work is a reasonable urgency. My mom's car was broke down 3 hours from home in the middle of the night I have been drinking soda to stay awake so I need to pee and sorry to say if this is going to take long I need to go in the bushes. Verbal warnings used to be instant, written 5 I think, and real tickets took over 20 minutes. He asked questions and I answered. So I got the verbal.

These are fantastic units and I highly recommend. Ran the R3 for years before upgrading to the R8 last year. The arrows are VERY nice and worth the upgrade. Filtering on the r8 seems to be a lot better as well.

If you aren't in a rush, Amazon warehouse deals is how I got mine a little cheaper. Amazon randomly runs the 20% warehouse items sale and I was able to snag a Like New version for $480. Box was sealed and everything was unopened. Basically a new unit at a nice discount.

Hey - thanks! I didn't realize Escort had a trade-in program. I have definitely been leaning more heavily on Uniden for some time now, but I still have Escort on my short list.
I have Uniden R4 and R7 in the house. Not super impressed because Gatso and laser becoming more common. So I was looking a Valentine V1 (android) and real-time telemetry to supplement regular detection. Uniden has dropped the ball on promising accessories and laser (IMHO) so to me real-time is necessary these days and detectors that integrate w/ telemetry start to provide more complete coverage. Yes laser detection is pretty much useless unless you get lucky or real-time telemetry so not super important to me except for fixed and optical which is also getting popular.

K-band not used at all for a very long time in my area, so yeah filtering that out certainly helps nuisance and also taking up scan time.

Radar detectors aren't for everyone, but if you're in the market, this is the best and the cheapest you're going to find it.

This detector is amazing. I'm using a config off vortex radar (highly recommended if you get one), auto muting, no false alarms, you'll be surprised how many cops are lurking about

I've tried a woot return a few years ago because the computers they sent me were beat up. Took forever, couldn't get ahold of anyone, eventually had to file a credit card dispute to get my money back.
