Yes Google voice worked for verification without unlocking it once get device pay $3 to unlock GV for porting or try activate with new number YMMV or port different number on activate page.

These Automatically unlock with only 1 month service after Activation on 60th day can confirmed unlock date by texting UNLOCK to 611611

Usually only high end android phones come with displayt-over-usb-c feature. So far for "deal phones" from prepaid carriers, not too much have this feature. This is the first one less than 100 from my obersevation.

So basically they first add the phone to your account and later someone will mark that phone can only be actived with port in. If you just activated quick enough before they mark it as port in only, you can activate it with new number. Thats my guess

I tried that, after clicking X , nothing happened when try to continue, It freezes, tried safari and chrome so far.

This worked great for me, I just used a Google Voice number for porting. The checkout options make it look like you can choose a cheaper plan, but only the $65 option will work to get the phone for free.
As user Jaggsta says, you'll need to pay $3 to unlock your Google Voice number to be able to port it and activate your new phone when it arrives, but it doesn't need to be unlocked to checkout.

hm so if using this strategy, it really doesnt matter what number you put in for a port when first ordering. for some reason my number isnt compatible, which is the first time ive seen this since i first got this number over 10 years ago. i might try this
