Activation would be inserting the Total Wireless sim can into the phone, powering it on, and going through the setup process.
You do not need to sign-up with your Google account.
Just get to the point where you can call the number and the device rings.
I usually skip connecting to a WiFi network, since that forces it to use the mobile data.
Once it's using mobile data, it is definitely activated.
If you go with an e-sim, then just go through the activation process once you power on.
No need to insert the SIM card.
