Just to clarify Tuya = the OEM that makes the chips a lot of cheap smart plugs and lightbulbs use. Tuya makes many chips for a wide variety of devices. Some use WiFi some use Bluetooth+WiFi. Regardless, a hub is not needed for any of them, just the app. I don't know if they make chips for Zigbee devices. Tuya-based devices are tied to the cloud, and it's not easy to get the keys that allow for local control. Even then, using them with 3rd party software like Home Assistant is a hit and miss. The reason I posted is because they're a good deal for 4 plugs that can be flashed with open source software (ESPHome) that works without the need to be tied to the Tuya cloud

They are not Zigbee based, they are Wifi based but I think the SmartLife app should work (I think it's basically the same as the Tuya Smart app) .

The ones from Menards have a slightly different model number, 75822 instead of 75702. They still might be flashable but YMMV.

Unfortunately, no. There have to be some sacrifices! I also have Sonoff S31's (flashed with ESPHome as well) with power monitoring but the Sylvania ones were so cheap I can forgive them not having it when all I need is a dumb on/off switch. Not having to open them and solder wires to flash them is another plus, like you mentioned
OK. right now, what are the best options for power monitoring tasmota compatible plugs? a couple years back I got some top-greener/KMC plugs.

What's the best available choices? Small like these is good also.

Also curious about good options for power monitoring. Picked up these at my local Ollie's today for simple on/off.

I want to say 'probably' but I don't use Tasmota so don't know for sure.

I think the Sonoff S31s are the cheapest I've found. They're 6.80 right now [amazon.com] on Amazon.

How about for wireless tuya-convert ability? what are the good options? Always a bit easier than opening up to flash..

I'm skeptical that the Smart+ Wifi plugs are that useful. I had the Smart+ Bluetooth/Wifi bulbs and they needed a different app to the Zigbee bulbs and once Sylvania abandoned cloud support you can ONLY use them inside your home when your smart device is on the same network. So no Alexa integration.

The Cree ConnectedMax A19 on the other hand do have cloud support. The color modes are a bit, shall we say, candy light, but the warm and cool white are semi-decent. These are useful.

The Sylvania retrofit downlights on the other hand have far better warm and cool whites. If you are lucky enough to have a Sylvania hub you get the option for scenes. There appears to be no such support in Smartthings. The repeater function doesn't seem to work for me in Smartthings. These are useful and above average.

I can't say I have experience with the Sylvania Smart+ strip lights.

most probably not. tasmota woks only on esp chips. nowadays most of cheap IoT devices have moved to use beken chips (probably they are few cents cheaper than esp).
I rarely see any new device using esp chips.

I see. That makes sense then. Indeed, my ESPHome configuration shows that these use the bk7231t chip.

have no idea what stock is like but there are some very good deals. 12 pack of Sylvania retrofit 5/6 inch lights for $20!!!Lego main street for under $60!!
I was excited until I learned they don't ship. I have 4 of these which I installed in my living room. If you have the Sylvania hub and app they have dynamic scenes like sunset and cloud simulation. But they abandoned cloud support. They work fine with Smart Things without the dynamic support.

Went to the Ollie's near me 3 days ago (at Frankford/Marsh in Dallas) and they didn't have the 4 pack of Sylvania smart plugs (either that or I couldn't find them after looking for 30-45 minutes). Went back today and they had 3 packs of them. I bought 1 pack of 4, so there are 2 packs left. They had a lot of the 4 pack Sylvania smart color bulbs though.

fyi. I tried setting a plug up with the Tuya app as someone suggested in an earlier post but I couldn't get that to work. So I downloaded the Sylvania app, set up the plug and connected it to Alexa....that went very smoothly for me.

Wifi anything is not for serious home automation, you want to do it right get Zigbee or Zwave+ and just have everything work no flashing or major tinkering or worrying about not having internet....

Amazon currently has open boxes of these for $21. You can go there and read all of the reviews. I was hoping they were compatible with Apple.

Experience: Got a package of the 4 lights and tested two.

One of the failed to register and the other said it failed but still showed up in the Sylvania app. Couldn't get the failed one to factory reset (turn off / on 5 times quickly, tried 8 times, tried waiting a few seconds between each turn, lots of permutations but none worked). Tried to get the "registered" one to factory reset and it won't factory reset either.

Called support (number on the box) and they stated that it sounds like I have a bad batch and to return them. They also suggested that I ignore the model and purchase a different more reliable model on amazon (I cannot recall the model number they gave me).

TLDR: the 4 light bulb packs might be junk and Sylvania support says to return and ignore them :-)

Allegedly ETL listed... so somewhere between a box of matches and UL-listed.
