I've played 1 and 2. If you like turn based JRPGs I highly recommend. I paid full price at launch and don't regret it one bit.
If you like JRPGs and have the time to play 1 and 2, I would highly recommend playing 1 first just because the QOL changes to 2 would make it harder to go back.
Story is still the weak point of the game, but it's not bad by any means. Gameplay is really fun, there's a lot of customization to the characters with the different classes. It can feel easy in the middle of the game but catches up later on where you need to have decent team/class synergy and understanding of mechanics to progress. Secret boss is really hard, I would have never figured it out. They also came out with extra battles that I still haven't completed as they're really hard.

I skipped most cut scenes and still enjoyed the game

+1

My 10yo son absolutely loved this series. He played 1 and then 2.

He loved the story line, music, battle mechanics, names of all the specials, etc.

He's been asking me when 3 is coming out...

Good if you're a fan of JRPGs and have time to kill, but nothing exceptional. As others have said the story is the weakest part.

Very good game. An improvement over the first. But like with the first, I completed all the character stories then bailed on the final boss.

I played #1 and my biggest gripe was the writing/story felt like it was for a 12 year old… based on your notes it seems this may not be better?

Story in #2 is stronger but the strength of the game is the battle mechanics. If the gameplay/mechanics wasn't enough in #1 for you to like the game #2 probably isn't for you.

It's on Xbox game pass. I beat the first but not sure I will finish 2. Overall, it's slightly better and gameplay is exactly the same. I only get this if you are a fan of 1. If you didn't like 1 then this won't change your mind

1 was on sale at Walmart for $10 as they cleared the last of the stock. It's also $30 digitally I believe right now or was last week.
