I've played 1 and 2. If you like turn based JRPGs I highly recommend. I paid full price at launch and don't regret it one bit.
If you like JRPGs and have the time to play 1 and 2, I would highly recommend playing 1 first just because the QOL changes to 2 would make it harder to go back.
Story is still the weak point of the game, but it's not bad by any means. Gameplay is really fun, there's a lot of customization to the characters with the different classes. It can feel easy in the middle of the game but catches up later on where you need to have decent team/class synergy and understanding of mechanics to progress. Secret boss is really hard, I would have never figured it out. They also came out with extra battles that I still haven't completed as they're really hard.

I skipped most cut scenes and still enjoyed the game

+1

My 10yo son absolutely loved this series. He played 1 and then 2.

He loved the story line, music, battle mechanics, names of all the specials, etc.

He's been asking me when 3 is coming out...
