The one thing I still hate about these Nest sensors is that you cannot specify your own schedule to switch between which sensor is used to detect temperature. For example, I want to automatically switch to use my remote sensor between the hours of 12am and 6am and then switch back to the main thermostat at all other times. I can't do this because the Nest app only give set time windows to switch between sensors, e.g. 7a-11a, 11a-4p, 4p-9p, and 11p-7a.

They did release a new sensor alongside a new thermostat/learning thermostat. The new sensor can give you the average temp of your whole home based on all the sensors. Not really a big selling point for me to upgrade.

Thanks for the post - got 2 for $39 just like OP. Adding a third sensor to my cart cancelled the discount and set the price back to $39 each.

They must be getting ready to release a new version. It used take effort to do better than $33/sensor.

Found it listed online for $19 at my store. They say they have 2, but I ordered 1 so I'll see if they can fulfill the order. I'd love to put one in my office which gets hot during the day.

What's the main appeal of these other than seeing the temp of a specific room?

you can have your thermostat use one of the remote sensors instead of its built-in sensor. For example at night you could have your Nest adjust the temperature based on what it's measuring in the bedroom instead of the location where the thermostat is.

If you have the new thermostat, you can have it average the temperature across all sensors, it can handle up to 6 of them.

You can set your Nest thermostat/zone to react to a specific room/sensor. You can change on demand. I switched from Ecobee because you can't.

You can also set Nest to set the hvac temperature based on that sensor, rather than the main hub. Guess it might be useful for multi zone with damper control hvacs.

That's unfortunate that that's all their upgrade is, then. It should've included a hygrometer, too. And the 6-sensor per Nest limit is so stupid.

It's useful in most homes because most builders put thermostats in places that don't make thermodynamic sense, and most people don't rewire their thermostats to move them.
