GH's service fees are outrageous (as most food delivery services are). A $26 Chinese food order I placed last month turned into $43 after adding service fees & ~$5 tip. Perhaps a 50% discount will even the total charge out, even if delivery only.

These delivery services are a joke. I only occassionally use Uber Eats and only when they do a 40 or 50% off deal. That basically gets it down to being the same price as picking it up myself. Most places jack up the menu prices on top of the fees the delivery services charge. Unless your physically disabled, there's no excuse to use them except laziness.
The prices are a joke, indeed. That's why it only makes sense to use these when there are steep discounts or when you cannot leave the house.

I had a co-worker who would use food delivery services a few times a week. He wasn't rich, either. Couldn't wrap my head around it.

Or you don't own a vehicle. I had planned on never getting one again an just using Uber an Lyft; an if it's under an hour; the bus. But Uber an Lyft jacked prices an the bus is ran by the government. So you know that's gonna be a problem.

How strange! People expect to pay the same dine-in/pick-up price for a meal that's delivered to their door step.
That's how it used to be

restaurants would hire their own delivery drivers and offer free delivery

I only use GH because of the free sub through Prime as it has the fewest options on the West Coast compared to its competitors. Uber Eats has the most egregious fees but has many BOGO deals you can pick up to avoid fees, and the subscription covers Uber rides. It also is the cheapest for an annual subscription if you can try to cancel before renewal, as they will typically offer you a discount for not cancelling on your next renewal.

And you'd tip em. Everyone happy. Restaurants got their money without paying egregious platform fees etc.

I'll second that. Out of the blue they started charging my card a monthly fee.

Even when I had a GrubHub+ membership, I hardly ever used it, because the fees were so much worse than DoorDash. Even Uber Eats, which has a lot worse fees than DoorDash, was better, when accounting for offers and discounts.

I tried using this promo. Then out of curiosity I went to the website of the restaurant I was ordering from. The 50% discount didn't even cover the difference in the total. Never touching GrubHub again.

I signed up for the free year when they started their affiliation w/ Amazon.

Two weeks later, without using the service, I get a credit notification for over a $125 order to a city 150+ miles away that I have never been to, to a restaurant I have never been to, delivered to a hotel chain I don't use. I call the restaurant to notify them, they say I have to call GrubHUb. It took over an hour to get with a GrubHub rep. By then the food was delivered, the restaurant lost their money on the order and I had to put a hold on my credit card. No apologies.

That sounds like an area problem.
No, it's not. The number of restaurants on GrubHub peaked in 2022 and the company's revenue peaked in Q4 2022.It's why the stock is down 80% in the last 5 years. The company is failing.

In that same time Uber Eats and DoorDash revenues and market share have increased, especially DoorDash.

In general I've found DoorDash has lowest fees but it can depend on the restaurant. For example where I live:

Round Table Pizza Large King Arthur Supreme

DoorDash (with Dashpass): $37.79 + $5.62 taxes and fees
Uber Eats (with Uber One): $37.79 + $9.36 taxes and fees
GrubHub (with GrubHub+): $37.79 + $5.61 taxes and fees

Delivery from Roundtable website: $35.99 + $10.70 taxes and fees

Surprisingly even though each delivery service marked up the price of the pizza by $2 DoorDash and GrubHub were still cheaper than delivery from the restaurant directly because they avoided a $6.50 delivery fee.

Uber Eats was the worst option here which tracks with my previous experience. And shockingly it would have cost an additional $10 if I didn't have Uber One, which is basically highway robbery because at that point we're talking about 60% fees, markups, and taxes.

Or at least price it transparently and not hide the service fees in higher menu prices
