Got an Amazon refurb w/ 16GB and 512GB SSD for $650. Battery at 97%. So far so good but YMMV.

8GB is generally regarded as insufficient, especially considering it's soldered in and non-upgradable. Apple shouldn't even be making these.

Sure. There are plenty of tasks that may end up needing more than 8gb of ram but at this point it's 2 generations old and almost 3. It's also an ultraportable fanless laptop. At this point people aren't buying it for a professional workstation. They are buying it for a cheap Mac that can surf the web, do email, etc and for that 8gb is fine for quite a lot of people.

These use unified ram as well, which means that 8gb is shared with your OS, applications, and video ram.
They work, but their design is naturally more demanding on ram since it doesn't take much to use 2GB-3GB of vram playing a video, on top of the video loaded in system memory. I personally really like these macbooks, I am a fan but they double dip when it comes to ram useage, it should be assumed the device will use 2GB-3GB of that 8GB of ram as Vram at any given moment which realistically leaves you with 5GB-6GB for everything else.
Great laptops for their purpose, excellent battery life, but 8GB is realistically their biggest short coming.

How's the appearance for the "acceptable " condition?

It looks brand new, no scratches of any kind. The only thing is that it came with a generic power supply. I'm not using it since I have an extra from Apple. YMMV but you have 90-days to return.
