Been shopping for one but need more shelf depth, this one is only 14" deep :/

True, but the posted unit has free shipping, while the closest Menards to me is a 70 mile round trip, so another $10 in gas to pick it up.

That's what I am using this for. However, you will need some trays/boxes for smaller items. Even bottles of 3" diameter would easily tip over otherwise.

There are liners made for this type of shelves. So if you don't want to go with tray/box you have another option.

Can this be split up into 2 units, with one that is one tube in height with two shelves and the other two tubes high with two shelves, one that is one tube up and the other at the second tube height with no shelf at the bottom, where taller boxes can be stored on the ground under the unit

This one says it's rated for 450 lbs. The other one claims to be rated for 1,000 lbs. From the photos of both, however, they look like the same design in terms of frame, shelves, wire pattern, etc.

I've never found liners for wire shelving that aren't ridiculously priced. Would appreciate any pointers to reasonably priced ones as I have a bunch of wire shelving.

Not sure what budget you have in mind. I just randomly typed wire shelf liners on amazon and the first one pop up is 25 for 5. May be you mistaken the price for each liner?
