According to the chatbot on their site:
Metro by T-Mobile unlocks mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:

The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
One hundred eighty (180) days must have passed since the device's activation date.
That's outdated info. Metro changed their unlocking waiting period from 180 days to 365 days on May 8, 2024. You can read Metro Unlocking Policy here: https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/t...ock-policy

Thanks for the clarity, but a whole year!? Are we certain that the phone only needs to be activated with a plan for just 1 month, and then be without service for the remaining 11 months for the unlock?

For those porting in a GV number...it takes a while to completely port it...I hear upto 4 weeks! When I activated, outgoing calls and texts were working but incoming calls and texts were still going to GV...and it was like this for more than a week until I called Metro's porting dept to fix it: (800)518-7519. Within a couple of minutes, incoming calls and texts started to work.
I recommend you check on Google voice that your number doesn't show there anymore. Last year that happened and didn't realize because all functions worked well. But number still was showing in voice. As a result the phone didn't unlock past the 6 months (it was before they changed the requirement to 1 year)

I don't have any Metro phones to be unlocked under the 1-year rules, but I have had 5 Metro phones (activated prior to May 8, 2024) that got unlocked after 180 days and only one month of service.

Yup. Checked. No more phone number associated with my GV account. Funny thing though is that I tried getting a new number assigned to my GV, but no matter which phone number I used to link/verify...it won't let me. Hopefully GV hasn't blocked me. Lol.

This is quite concerning. I used a GV number to port in for an iphone 12. Incoming phone calls still go to the web GV number. Today I deleted the linked phone number. Should I also manually delete the GV number as well? Or should I let the GV number port transfer complete by itself (which can take many weeks) and will Google delete the GV number from Google Voice automatically? My 1st month ends in 19 days and I will not pay for the 2nd month. I don't want the GV number to mess up the 365 days unlocking.

This is the message you get when you try to manually delete a GV number. You may have to wait 1 year before you can get another number.

Important: If your phone's voicemail is forwarded to Google Voice, switch back to your phone's voicemail before deleting your Google Voice number. When you delete your Google Voice number, you won't be able to receive calls and text messages on that number.
You'll still be able to see the number's call history and messages.
You can reclaim this number within 90 days if it's your only Google Voice number.
You can change the number once per year.

I also tried creating a new Google account and get a new GV number. the link/verify stage always fail.

However, when I tried it using my daughter and wife's long standing Google account, it worked immediately.

Also, don't delete your GV number from your GV account. Otherwise, the porting may fail and not sure what will happen to your Metro line and whether you will be charged extra as someone who didn't port in their number. A successful porting by Metro will automatically delete it for you. You'll need to call into their porting department after activation for the porting to complete. Otherwise, you may end up waiting a couple of weeks or so for the porting to complete.

Thank you for your advice. I will call Metro's porting dept to fix it: (800)518-7519 as you have mentioned. While talking to them, did you tell them that it was a GV number?

No need to tell them it's a GV number. They'll ask you security questions and the number to port. Less than a 5-minute call.

I called the porting dept today and they were able to complete the port transfer while I was on the phone with them. Now incoming and outgoing phone calls and texts work perfectly. The GV number has been removed from my GV account automatically. Thank you for your help.

For anyone else curious trying to add a GV number into their GV account...and no matter which phone number you tried to link/verify it with, you get an error message...
