Metro by T-Mobile unlocks mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
One hundred eighty (180) days must have passed since the device's activation date.

Important: If your phone's voicemail is forwarded to Google Voice, switch back to your phone's voicemail before deleting your Google Voice number. When you delete your Google Voice number, you won't be able to receive calls and text messages on that number.
You'll still be able to see the number's call history and messages.
You can reclaim this number within 90 days if it's your only Google Voice number.
You can change the number once per year.

However, when I tried it using my daughter and wife's long standing Google account, it worked immediately.
Also, don't delete your GV number from your GV account. Otherwise, the porting may fail and not sure what will happen to your Metro line and whether you will be charged extra as someone who didn't port in their number. A successful porting by Metro will automatically delete it for you. You'll need to call into their porting department after activation for the porting to complete. Otherwise, you may end up waiting a couple of weeks or so for the porting to complete.
