I jumped on a similar deal back in February/March on iPhone 12's with the plan to trade them in for iPhone 16's (I'm a T-Mobile postpaid customer). According to those IMEI checking sites, they were all carrier-locked back then. 6 months later, they all became unlocked according to the same websites, including three that were sealed in the box. Unless they change their policy in the next 12 months, you should all be good if you plan to gift them in the next holiday season or sell them sealed for a better price. I just sold sold the two today that I didn't use to trade.
This is different from T-Mobile postpaid. As a postpaid T-Mobile customer, if you buy an iPhone from T-Mobile, not only do you have to activate it with your sim card on the network, you also cannot take the sim card out and use it in a different device for 40 days, AND you have to pay off the EIP balance (forfeiting any remaining credit). Fortunately, devices bought directly from Apple are unlocked from day one even if they're financed by T-Mobile.
So if you're new to Metro, I'd suggest you start with an iPhone 12, use that one to manage your account and then buy as many as iPhone 13's if you're allowed to - until you're "blacklisted", as I'm now
