I own the R7. Main difference between the two is the R8 has bluetooth which enables you to connect via an app to tweak settings through your phone. Note, if you have an iPhone your only option is the $10 R8 companion app. Whether that justifies $170 is up to you (it wasn't in my case).

Because of Bluetooth you can pair the R8 (or R4) with a companion app that can read the signals and pair it with other existing data. This is more for the mega nerds. You can still run these apps with an R7 you just wont see the radar signals overlaid into the map (plus some other features). With that said I love my R7 and for 95% of people that would be as far as they needed to go for a detector. Heck even the R4 is a great buy if you don't care about Arrows and while arrows are nice (Is the Cop in Front/Side/Behind) to save an additional $90 I might just recommend the R4 for most (plus that has Bluetooth).

So the R9 is a full system that detects Radar and deals with Laser, an R8 would not be required for the R9 to function. I havent seen it broken apart into only the Laser portion yet.

Have the R3 and R7...both are great detectors and saved my bacon on multiple road trips. Personally, I think the R7 is the sweet spot due to the arrows which show you the direction of the "threat".
