I own the R7. Main difference between the two is the R8 has bluetooth which enables you to connect via an app to tweak settings through your phone. Note, if you have an iPhone your only option is the $10 R8 companion app. Whether that justifies $170 is up to you (it wasn't in my case).

Mute button at the front on the R8. Also the ability to use apps on your phone for ease of adjustment and utilize all the detector capabilities better.

The R8 does have longer range than the R7. Not by much though.

I have R4 and have used the Bluetooth features once. Not that useful for me. Getting R7 for the arrows.
