Note: S24fe appears to work out of the box with a T-Mobile sim as reported by multiple people in the thread.

Total wireless has the same deal, are their phones locked?
Tmobile / metro unlock policy is not consumer friendly. 1 year wait..no thx
Total wireless is only 60 days, but you will need to go thru the ID verification process

It was better before we abused it. I only bought phones for family / friends, didn't flip any of them, but that's still close to a dozen devices that were on Metro's network for just one month. I am honestly surprised that the old unlock policy lasted as long as it did.
I'm not sure you're right, the esim might be downloaded/installed at the initial boot up (though I actually don't know for sure either way). And this might vary between androids and iphones.
yeah, idk how they preinstall the esim but the phone picked up 5G signal (show on top right corner) as soon as i boot it up and tap continue to begin setting up the phone. Once u at the screen to sign in your home wifi, the phone makes that mandatory and there is noway to skip as the phone will use wifi connection to register the esim.
However, u have the option to erase esim once u done setup though

I'm not sure how this works? Is there a monthly subscription? Do I take a new number or use my existing number? I have T-Mobile but would like to have the S24FE for 199.

Now that I've looked into this a bit more, I'm pretty sure that the esim is not preinstalled at all, but it's downloaded when you first turn the device on and go through the initial setup. See the "edit" to my previous post:
