Reposting a slight edit of my comment from the Newegg thread:
Good deal but if you're looking for an AM4 upgrade for gaming purposes you're better off opting for the 5700X3D as the 3D cache usually results in higher average FPS and better 1% lows. 5800X will beat it slightly in productivity tasks. 5700X3D price has been coming down and you can usually find it on AliExpress for around $150 if you want to take on the small risk of being without a consumer warranty and don't need the stock cooler.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about I have 5800X, 5950X, 7700X and 7950X all running fantastic on good air coolers and temps are fine.

Using the same 240mm AIO, my 5900x runs about 10-15C hotter than my old 5600x. It's also not as stable using the xmp profile with 4000 ram for some reason.

lol, why would I spend a good amount of money on a good AIO for a $120 CPU? My old 5900x worked fine with a $25 Thermalright air cooler.

I probably would have done this instead but I ended up going with the 5700x3D deal on Newegg. The extra memory kit made it more worth it to me

Big time upgrade yeah. Zen3 over zen 1 hugely faster single core performance and multi core is pretty significantly upgraded. Just upgrade your motherboards bios before you install it.

Not a meaningful upgrade. Like 3-5% is not worth upgrading over. Plus you would lose integrated graphics.

But the 5700x3d deal on Newegg for 195 with the included Corsair memory kit is a better deal. Flip the memory kit and it's like a 145$ with way better gaming headroom performance.

So the 5700x3d is about 3-5% worse than the 5800x. And about 10% slower in single core performance.

But the 3D v cache in certain physics workloads is off the charts. But generally speaking if your doing video editing and blender your not gonna see that performance increase. That's why this chip is awesome for gaming. But I ended up going with the X3D instead of the 5800x mainly because the included memory kit made it a better deal, and I do play some games that are very multi core threaded intensive.

Non of these have an iGPU unfortunately. But check craigslist or FB market place for a GTX 1060 or something like that for less than 100$

I'm kind of underwhelmed by this, compared to the Ryzen 5600g.

the Ryzen 5800x uses about 61% more power, so I would assume roughly 60% more performance. However, you get an increase of 35%, instead.


I'm curious about why that would be the case?

It's for my brothers build, but he still has GTX 1080 8gb.
Assuming even with R7 1700, it's the bottleneck?
Would 5800x do much for fps?

If your doing this for gaming, get the 5700x3d. It will help a lot more than this CPU.
