2.5 HDDs are totally a thing, just not really used or worth it anymore. They have been in laptops since before the rise of SSDs. I still have a few 250gb 2.5 spinners lying around collecting dust.

Gen-5 will get more popular next year with RW speed exceeding 1.3GB/s. Samsung started mass production already. Expect gen-4 price to further go down. I use 2xgen4 raid.

Think they were strictly speaking spinning rust drives, which I don't think enterprise SAS drives reach. U.2 nvmes, is another story though..

I picked up an 8tb samsung 870 qvo 2.5" sata SSD a while ago. I got it when drives were cheap for $329, at the current prices this is only slightly more expensive then the QVO and much faster with a longer lifespan. There are not too many 8tb consumer SSD options

No, there are plenty of 2.5" spinning disk drives. Laptops used them before ssd was cost effective.

8TB and 16TB 2.5 SSD are a thing. They just cost a lot. But samsung makes a 870 QVO 8TB for $625. But it is QLC. However it should outlive a high capacity 2.5 HDD.

TEAMGROUP EX2 16TB SSD is a bit pricy and hard to find. But i have seen it for around $1800-$2400.

You're right, I thought they were confusing SSDs and forgot smaller spinners were even a thing.
