Is the RAM expandable? This looks like it is. Amazon says otherwise

If you're not going to go Synology I would just build your own NAS imo.

Most likely yes. Several of us bought the TS-262 in the other thread and RAM was no longer soldered. I put 16GB of RAM in mine, instead of the 4GB single stick it shipped with.

This has an HDMI port. You can hook this up to your tv and direct play your video without streaming.

Couple questions if you don't mind. How hard will be installing ram and disks for someone not tech savvy?
What disks did you put in them(the model you bought)?
Thank you

When I bought this with the same assumption based on the Amazon page, it was NOT expandable. I had to return it. However, the 2 GB model of this DOES have expandable. Before ordering, check on QNAPs spec page (in case things have changed since I bought it).

EDIT: Looks like QNAP changed the hardware and it now does have expandable memory. I bought it before 01/2024... https://www.qnap.com/en-us/produc...s/hardware

It's not really difficult. Just make sure you buy RAM with compatible specs and find a good youtube video. Pretty straight forward and easy process.

As for disks, I populated mine with 4x 4TB mx500 disks when they were cheapest (yeah I know, SSDs, not spinning drives) and I actually had major issues with the drives randomly dropping off. Turned out, for some bizarre reason these particular drives need extra force when pushing the bays in for them to make good contact. Was worried that they would maybe come lose over time, but it's been about a year or so with zero issues.

Easy as pie. There are YouTube videos showing the process. I bought 18TB Seagate IronWolf enterprise drives renewed off eBay for $155 each since I only had two drive bays. If I were buying a 4 bay unit I would buy the 12TB drives off slickdeals that are $75 each and run them on RAID5. That'd be a 36TB array for $300 in drives. For RAM I bought two 16GB PNY sticks off Amazon for $25.

If you are not tech savvy I would definitely recommend to go with a Synology.

This doesn't make any sense. Installing hard drives is exactly the same process between QNAP and Synology. Installing RAM is a bit more involved (again, regardless of brand) but is very doable, especially with tons of videos on YouTube.

I was speaking more to the software side of things but the Synology does make a RAM upgrade easier. Unlike the Qnap which has you removing all the drives with the Synology you just install from the exterior bottom by removing a plate. Have both a Qnap and Synology and Synology is definitely the better box for the non tech savvy.

Have you seen these?

They do have a N100 version. If looking for NAS it may be worthwhile taking a look. The company also makes a four bay box style model but is having trouble keeping up with demand.

Yes, thanks for the info. I am also thinking about stripping a cheap N100/300 mini PC and turn it into NAS.

This is a decent deal, for all of the comments about synology being better that is not necessarily true. Upgrading RAM is easy for both, you need to remove the drives and place the ram into the slot. If you are running containers, you will probably use portainer. Imo qnap does provide more options, synology is more refined
