I was really excited for this deal until I saw the review photos. There are barely any real pieces to use. The bucket is huge, so it's deceiving.

Is this pretty similar to Lego Technic? If so better or worse quality?

It's completely different I'd say. Quality is good. Knex is somewhat flexible. It's much more appropriate for younger kids than technic. There are no small intricate pieces. You can still build functioning machines with it though like a windmill or something.
