I have the Masterbuilt 1050 and love it. To me the charcoal adds more flavor than the pellets. Just finished a 18 hour cook and it was only about 1 bag of lump charcoal

The first few reviews from the Weber website say that the quality of this is absolute trash

Apples to Oranges Comparison. I have the First gen of SmokeFire X6. I can talk about issues and what i like but you are asking if you should eat a hamburger or a hotdog. My bias is towards the pellet grill.

Pellets have a mild smoke flavor and some people like that over stronger charcoal flavor and smell. Your meals don't have to smell and taste like they came off a campfire every single week.

Ease of use, start up takes a few minutes and mine reaches high temps in about 15 min. If everything is loaded up all i have to do is have a look over, set the desired temperature and wait. If i need to load pellets i pour them out of the bag or scoop out of the bucket, and might get some dust on me. With charcoal the set up time takes a while you need to fuss with ignition and making sure they catch fire. And your always get covere in charcoal dust or smudges no matter how careful you are.

I can walk away, leave the house for hours with my grill going on my deck without any concerns. With a charcoal grill you always need to keep an eye on it and consider your home patio set up.

There's more but pellets won me over gas or charcoal because i can have smoke flavor and taste without the hassle of the charcoal.

Can anyone comment on build quality of this vs RecTeq?

I have a MBGS, build quality is junk, but it cooks good food. If you like to be able to get to strong smoke flavor, charcoal is the way to go. Unfortunately for my family, most do not prefer the smoke flavor, particularly not on beef. I think pellet is the way to go for me.

This seems like a great price, but I don't want to have to buy another grill in a couple years because it starts to fall apart. Will be left outside year round in the north east.

Thank you for your detailed reply. Just watched a couple of reviews and the main theme is the build quality and grease burning. I agree that these can't be compared, but both are the same price on Amazon right now.

I do not have any experience with RecTeq or Weber pellet grills. However, I've seen nothing but positive reviews on RecTeq and their support. This Weber has a lot of negative reviews on the build quality, however the warranty terms seem reasonable (3/5 years depending on components). I'm still trying to figure out what I want to get eventually but if I had to make a decision today it would be a RecTeq.

Just a comment that the Smokefire is being replaced by the Searwood and is being discontinued. The equivalent size Searwood is $1199.99

I used to own a recteq (and camp chef). I sold both of them because they imparted essentially no smoke flavor. The recteq had nice build quality, but it was a glorified outdoor oven. It also didn't get hot enough across the surface to do any meaningful grilling, so it was a bit of a one-trick pony. I've read the smoke fire (and new camp chef with the smoke box) are the only pellet grills that produce any meaningful smoke flavor, so I'm going to give the weber a shot.

damn I thought these got discontinued... I would check the youtube reviews before buying this, I know the original SmokeFire models had some horrendous reviews.
