Here is the thing, people talk about luggage. You really dont want to bring a lot of luggage to Japan unless you like lugging the luggage around public transit. If you plan to buy stuff, just buy a luggage in Japan and load it up on the last days of your trip and have Yamato ship the luggage from your hotel to Narita for $20. Just pay for luggage on the return trip.
If you are near Ueno then I recommend the train (Skyliner) instead.

My only complaint is their seats, its a bit stiff for a 10 hour flight. But i was too drunk to notice much! HAHAHHAHAHAH....passing on the complaint from the wife.
There are some quirks that make it odd, but that's Japan generally. Mostly, it's great.
You will pay significantly less for their services over the legacy carriers JAL and ANA. Even if you purchase the pillow/blanket/food option, you are saving money vs. a regular carrier. The staff is still Japanese and thus service is much better than most US airlines full service flights.
Most people we know will use it to get business class on the cheap. Their business class is 1/2 the price of the legacy carriers and thus the planes are setup with a huge business class section to handle that clientele. They have decent seats that lay flat and you get more leg room. All other services are still al la carte. If you want to check a bag, have a pillow & blanket and some food it will cost you about $140 extra.

As others have said, pack like a college student and you can save a few dollars here and there. Board the plane wearing multiple layers, bring an empty water bottle to fill up at the terminal, buy food at the airport and bring it onto the plane for you to eat later. Stuff like that.
If this is your first time going to Japan, I recommend going on the first half of March, as the second half is a bit warmer and closer to Cherry Blossom season but also a busy Spring Break for the youths over there. This is my 2nd trip to Japan so I plan on doing the 2nd half with more hiking, more onsens, checking out the new destinations built since 2018, and more socializing with the locals.
I'm traveling solo but I'm down to make friends or have lunch with anyone traveling on the same flight. 🙂
