Made in China not in Japan. Which other threads have described as important.

Zojirushi makes the best rice cookers. This 10 cup model is too large for most folks and I would recommend getting the smaller version. Cooking small batches doesn't get optimal results in a large rice cooker. It is important to use the rice scooper they give you (based on the wood sake go cup) that is 3/4 of a us cup or about 180ml. The water line is optimized for this rice measurement. The Zojirushi allows for some forgiveness as it accounts for how much of the water weight is there at the start and near end of the cycle (this fuzzy logic means you won't get an time remaining readout until you are already cooking). Really is a great rice cooker that spoils you.

This is a Japanese rice cooker where you are supposed to rinse your rice several times to wash out the starch that causes the kernels to stick together. Most Japanese/Sushi style rice is Japonica short grain white rice and should be rinsed until the water runs clear.

If you are cooking brown rice you only need a simple rinse to reduce pesticide and any debris. You won't get much in the way of sticky starch since the bran is still encapsulating the kernel. It will have a natural nutty flavor and very little in the way of sticking (unless over cooked).

If you are cooking American "enriched" white rice you should NOT rinse it. That cloudiness is more than white rice starch from processing. It includes additional nutrients the USDA recommends for folks not eating a balanced diet. Usually it includes: Thiamine (B1), Niacin (B3), Folic acid (B9), Vitamin B6, Iron, Zinc, Selenium.

If in doubt look at the packaging to see if it is no rinse enriched (adding what was removed) or fortified (adding more than what was there). You should avoid using parboiled rice as that has already been cooked once and is best done on the stovetop.

We tried one of these for a while, and while it worked well, we did some tests with our instant pot and really couldn't tell much of a difference, beyond the zoji taking an hour for rice and IP taking 15. Sold the zoji
I suspect that 9 out of 10 people would have the same result in a blind test. Zojirushi has a carefully cultivated cult following amongst people who have convinced themselves they can taste the difference, and that paying Zojirushi's exorbitant prices are worth it because of the "Built in Japan" quality... even though this model is clearly noted as being made in China by laborers earning CNY29 per hour.

"Zojirushi is the better known Japanese brand".
That implies this rice cooker is made in Japan. It is clearly stated on their website it is made in China.

I don't have much luck with Zojirushi. Bought one awhile back, the original pot chips/scratches which they refused to replaced under warranty so I bought a replacement pot, and it didn't last very long either; it has the same issues. I wash it very carefully with soft sponge.
Prepare for incoming from the Cult of Zojirushi.

I use Cuckoo to cook rice.

But for transporting and keeping food for a potluck warm, making porridge, steaming dumplings or custards.. this dude handles it.

Gotta say though that it started cooking rice unevenly and not keeping it fresh for days after the 2 year mark, hence the Cuckoo
If I paid an absurdly high price for a rice cooker that was supposed to be the industry best by far, and it lasted all of two years before malfunctioning, I doubt I'd be as forgiving as you.

I have used both the Instant Pot and the Zojirushi to cook rice. If you are using the instant pot you should get the non-stick bowl as scrapping rice off the stainless steel pot is a pain. The big difference is that the Instant Pot is a pressure cooker and it seals in all the water. You'll need to use a lower water ratio and IMHO you'll never get the beautiful individual grains to not stick together. For folks raised on mushy rice this is probably preferred, but if you like Asian style steamed rice the Zojirushi's venting of the steam leads to better control over the starch breakdown. To each their own.

Toyota is Japanese
Many people buying this Zojirushi rice cooker are under the assumption it is MANUFACTURED in Japan with "Japanese-built quality". It clearly is not. If you believe that products built in China are of the same quality as those built in Japan or the USA, we have a vast difference of opinion.

I'm not sure how your "Toyota is Japanese" comment is relevant, considering the following Toyota models and their Country of Origin, as "China" is nowhere to be found:
Toyota Sienna (built in Princeton, Indiana)
• Toyota Sequoia (in Princeton, Indiana)
• Toyota Highlander (in Princeton, Indiana)
• Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (in Georgetown, Kentucky)
• Toyota Camry (in Georgetown, Kentucky)
• Toyota Avalon (in Georgetown, Kentucky)
• Toyota Tacoma (in San Antonio, Texas)
• Toyota Tundra (in San Antonio, Texas)
• Toyota Corolla (in Blue Springs, Mississippi)

Prius, Mirai, Land Cruiser and 4Runner are made in Japan.

"Made in China" spelled out on the Zojirushi website:

"Logic"? See my reply to Timless. Toyotas sold in the USA are built in either Japan or the USA. If you happen to believe that products built in China are of the same quality as those built in the USA or Japan, we have little to discuss... but keep in mind that Zojirushi itself feels the need to qualify its Country of Origin with a disclaimer:
"Country of Origin:
Made in China
Made to Zojirushi Standards.
This product was manufactured in a Zojirushi factory that meets the highest standards set by Zojirushi."

I've always wanted a Zoji but I've been using an Aroma Housewares rice cooker (about $50) for the past 10 years and it has made really good rice for me. I'm tempted to try the Zoji but is it really worth it?
If your Aroma works then why ruin a good thing? Wait for it to break and then upgrade. The early Aroma models I believe were rebranded National/Panasonic models that used a pop up spring hot plate that is nearly indestructible!

You do not wash korean/japanese rice until water is completely clear. You should only rinse it 2 or 3 times well.
Every family is different. My Japanese father taught me to use running cold water, hand fully immersed in the rice moving it around to shake the milled starch loose and then carefully pouring out the milky water but not the white rice. Repeat until water is clear. Fill to the correct cup water line. Let sit for 30 minutes and then cook. If you buy "new crop" rice at the beginning of the season you don't need to let it soak as long, but if you have an old bag of rice the presoak before cooking makes a real difference in the fluff you get. Also dipping the rice paddle in water before & after scooping reduces the rice cling.

As for only rinsing the rice a couple of times, there is new milling technology that makes it possible to skip. In Japan this kind of rice is called "Musenmai No-Wash Rice" and requires the use of the green tinted rice cup Zojirushi gives you. I don't usually see this rice here unless I'm at a Japanese grocery store. https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlif...ce_but_is/

Yes, logic. He is saying Toyota is Japanese and not necessarily manufactured in Japan. If you don't understand a reply that simple then we have nothing to discuss. Enjoy your day and don't let a random SD comment ruin it. Peace

Anyone else's model break down? I had the exact model in the 6-cup size. After 3 years of light use, the circuit board got wet somehow and completely fritzed. I did nothing that would have caused this. Became a paperweight.

I have a cheapo $40 unit now and it's lasted forever.

I'll never understand the hype of these. I make almost daily, I bought one of these thinking it would be so much better than the $20 Aroma rice cooker I normally use. This thing takes longer to cook rice and is quality is indiscernible from the $20 rice cooker.

What am I missing?
