I think there may be some people that mistakenly think this is for a Pro... When I saw 990, my first thought was "Pro", then I realized my mistake...

990 Evo for $120???????

I think they meant to say $85.... Must be a typo. Wink

Totally fine if all you are doing is installing games on your PS5.

there are other similar ssds for cheaper if you are brand agnostic
Any suggestions that is a better value?

Whats the difference between this and 980 pro 2tb?
I mean there's a number of differences, you can google them if you're that curious. The bigger ones though, is that the PRO has DRAM the EVO doesn't, the PRO reads and writes faster at every level whether or not that is really "felt" outside of benchmarking software...ehhh for most people probably not.

But they both use TLC, both have the same write endurance, the same warranty, is it worth the price difference? Depends what's important to you, sale for sale, I think the PRO at 2TB was going for $140, so it's only a $20 difference, it's whether or not that really is important to you. Unfortunately for me, I'm looking more in the 4TB+ arena for size, m.2 slots are precious, I gotta think about the future.

If you're looking to increase PS5 game storage, Nextorage is a good bet where you can get a 2tb drive for around $100. Prices have fluctuated from 90 to 115 this year depending on the specific model.

Honestly, any gen 4 drive will be fine, dramless or not, as the PS5 isn't going to load games significantly faster. you're looking at a few seconds saved, not minutes. streaming data from the SSD while playing wouldn't be affected as games aren't loading multi gigabytes of data per second (yet).

You want to know what can affect your PS5 loading times appreciably? Whether or not you have a good heatsink on your ssd. Once the heat ramps up on your SSD, it will throttle speeds. The heatsink will help keep up with sustained transfers. If you had to decide between 2 models that were priced the same, and one had slower transfers than the other but has a heatsink and the faster one has no heatsink, get the former. And if you have an ssd installed without a heatsink to buy one. You can score one for less than 10 bucks (or even cheaper on temu/AliExpress) and that will help keep sustained transfers up and prolong the life of your SSD.

one word of caution: there's a bunch of no name 2 and 4 tb drives from Amazon. they look to have a lot of ratings but I am not familiar with these Chinese brands (what's Fikwot?) to take a chance with them yet. The price savings isn't worth the pain of you having to ship the product out to China if you have a problem .

tldr: buy the largest gen 4/5 drive you can afford that includes a heatsink, giving some preference to stuff like warranty, brand reputation, support in your country, etc.

Both m482 and 990evo are dram-less with HMB (host memory buffer).
M482 has slightly higher speeds (will you notice it?), but 990evo comes with newer nvme version and pcie version.

He was asking for something that was a better value and the M482 IMO is a better value. It costs less, and as you pointed out, has minimal speed differences.

PCI-E 5.0X2 gets you nothing over PCI-E 4.0X4 in terms of theoretical bandwidth. The only thing it gets you is an extra 2 lanes for other hardware on certain motherboards.

Ordered the m482 for $100 on msi website. Spec seems to be much better speed than this. But mean while was able to score a 2tb samsung 990 pro for $80 of fb market

Is this your thing, you make exclamatory claims in the form of a question so that when someone see's all the problems with it you can say you were just asking a question?

I am not accountable for anything above. Just asking a question.

But to answer your question, 100% they were not $60 2 years ago as the drive was released 9.5 months ago.

Two years ago the 980 PRO was about $225 for 2TB and the 970 EVO was about $200.

Last Year they were about $100 and $75, respectively.

So the drive you were asking about, the time frame you were asking about, and the price you were asking about were all wildly incorrect.

Why did I take the time to google this when you couldn't? Brandolini's Law.

2TB 990 Pro is $164 at Amazon now. I just bought one last weekend from Best Buy at $180 cuz I had $75 in RZ certs expiring and I needed to buy SOMETHING or lose them. (Sucks they don't sell Blu-rays anymore.) So end price was $105. My mobo has 4 M2 slots (one not usable to keep max GPU lane speed so this will fill that last available slot. Will use it for my video editing/music recording drive then archive to the 12TB spinner.

Yeah that's why I said sale for sale, unfortunately the two sales didn't overlap for too long. And yeah I'm in the same boat 4 m.2 slots, luckily my 4th one only shares lanes with a pcie x2 slot, so I can fill it up without worrying about my GPU
