Depends on your situation. Do you need another HDMI input? Want slightly more power? Does "Made in Japan" carry weight for you?
My take is that the 3800 is the "Slickdeal's darling" because it's 90-95% of the 4800 w/o the additional hundreds of dollars (they even share the same DAC and have the same Dirac functionality)!
Good old Amir. The differences between modern DACs are well below the threshold of human hearing. Test benches though can reveal some differences, plus I'm sure there are differences in the noise floor, etc., between different individual units. It's probably about the absolute last thing you should worry about while building out your system. Different speakers, subs, displays, etc., are where you should worry about individual performance, along with your room, treatments, etc. Those things will absolutely make a very noticeable difference. DAC's maybe your dog can tell the difference.
Waiting for formal confirmation that Dirac ART will be supported on the 3800 & 4800 before buying. It would suck if it is only supported on the 900 series
Marantz has better warranty because it's the "premium brand". Other companies do the same thing. Even my car was like this. Roll into the combined Hyundai Genesis dealer and they treat you a bit better with the Genesis and prioritize you. Then they double the price.

Marantz has a proprietary HDAM circuit that supposedly makes it sound "better". Most of the internals are the same & not worth the extra $$$ IMO vs Denon

that's a really good question, because the way that the feature sets are deliberately designed, it's hard to match the 3800 with an exact replacement from another brand name.
in general, if people want multiple sub outs or dirac for instance, we can't get it in all brands, and that's not by accident.
on top of that, the manufacturers fudge the numbers, for instance as someone pointed out with the Onkyo TXRZ50:

250 W/Ch (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 10% THD, 1 channel driven)
Notice that's for 1kHz (instead of a full 20Hz-20kHz) and at 10% THD for only 1 channel driven. That's a seriously abnormal way of rating power, plainly done just to post a big number. Also that Onkyo is on the same platform as all the other Onkyos and Pioneers that exhibit an undocumented power limiting mode that's completely hidden from the user.
the 4800 is a better receiver, it doesn't have the design flaws, but at $300+ it's harder to justify.

I had high hopes going into this review thinking the company had seen the advantage its superior objective measurements in the past and would try to capitalize on them. Sadly, the reverse seems to be true with the DAC section taking a large step backward. Considering that the 3800 costs $500 more than 3700H, this is very surprising to me. Yes, inflation has a lot to do with that but surely the eye needed to be focused on making sure they at least met the same level of performance as last generation.
The good news is that the amplifier seems to be same design as last generation and has only taken a small hit.
Denon had been my "goto" recommendation for AVRs and even AVPs. When anyone asked me about either, I would just say "get a Denon AVR." While subjectively the performance of this new generation may be similar, I can't accept the regression in objective measured performance.

i have a 4500, for me i'd ask if the newer version of audyssey on the x3800 would do a better job of knocking down the brightness on old klipsch speakers.
i'd also try to apply the amir testing to how i use the receiver, for instance i'm only using hdmi inputs.
i don't think that there is a generic application answer for everyone, but we should be questioning how we support the monopoly that owns all of these major brand names; do we buy their substandard crippled receivers, or do we buy their later models with better feature sets, for instance.
They were different companies at one time but a wave of consolidation over the past decade plus in the large audio brands has drastically changed the landscape.

Is it even a different version of Audy? Both have XT32 so should be basically the same. Unless you need a feature the 4500h lacks then just keep it if it sounds good to you.
For brightness try the reference instead of flat setting after calibration. Should roll off highs slightly. Can try the app too and implement a custom house curve. Assuming you don't want to change the bright speakers.

a few things about specifications.
you are looking at the wrong spec if you are interested in making an AB comparison between two models, the ONLY valid test would be the FTC test as the parameters are outlined in the test (# channels driven, impedance used, THD allowed, FR used, etc.).using that testing method the onkyo has better specs. :
Onkyo RZ50 - 120 wpc (8 ohms, 20Hz–20kHz, 0.08% THD, 2-ch driven) - actual test result = 136wpc
Denon 3800H - 105 wpc (8 ohm, 20Hz-20Khz, 0.08% THD, 2ch driven) - actual test result = 114wpc
Now the caveat to that test is that it only represents the 2 channel output. When you run all channels you are going to be at ~50-70% of the 2 channel rating. And since that is the way users will operate the unit (Not just 2 channel) that makes the 2 channel rating more for info only.
If you look at the Denon spec sheet it shows a similar 1KHz test with 10% THD - 215 watts per channel (6 ohm, 1khz, 10% 1ch drive). So again the Onkyo spec is better at 250 vs 215. But again a meaningless test as no one will operate their AVR driving 1 channel.
The important features for most users will be the number of channels it can process or internally amplify (These may be different), room correction software (Dirac is an added cost option on the Denon), sub outputs which are independent on Denon but can be done in other manners such as REW) and price.

It has a few other added features but are not sonic differences.
If you use or plan to take advantage of the preouts that will pretty much negate that benefit.
Even if you were to get the 4800 for the low sale of $1300, that's almost $400 difference!
That would cover most of both Dirac RCs but you don't really need Dirac imo.

Well DLBC is a requirement for ART.
Most people in here don't even believe DLBC offers any benefit/not required!
There is no real market for ART at this level.
TBH unless your base layer/core speakers are all full range/reference & using 4 subs DLBC would suffice at this level.
Keep in mind Audyssey already offers ART like subwoofer support out of the box!
I picked up the LX 805 about 3 weeks ago when BB had it down to $1500. Is it worth swapping the 805 for this? I wanted 4 discrete subwoofer channels for my HT which this provides. The 805 has 2 pairs of subwoofer channels (not really a deal breaker)

You could save some money on the 3800+ Dirac license. Or you could add a minidsp and a UMic and gain the functionality that you need for your subs and keep the 805. Most people who are really trying to dial in multiple subs with the 3800/4800 are still going to run a minidsp.

Not sure I'd ever buy another Denon. I have the AVR-X2700H and how they handled the 4k 120hz issue left a bad taste in my mouth. Their fix was this annoying adapter box which took over 6 months to come out. While it fixed the issue it just added another mess of cables to my setup.

They actually share the same DAC including the 6700.
There isn't anything that offer what this does especially at this price point imo.
