Just checked, and the 9 inch 5230 scissors that are also made in Japan [amazon.com] (include a nice plastic protective cover as well) are selling for only $17.44 right now.
Also, here's another retailer selling these same scissors [wolffindustries.com] for $91.64. If you look at the much more detailed description under the "Origin" heading, it states "Handcrafted in Japan."

Edit: One of the reviews on Amazon mentioned a study done on Project Farm comparing Kai scissors to other brands. The Kai kept their sharpness longer than any of the other brands tested. Here's the Project Farm link if interested.
