I've been lurking in this thread a while. Back in March I got the Motorola Stylus phone on one of the Slickdeals and followed it up with the Samsung Tablets for next to nothing. I let the account just die off and today I decided to take advantage of this deal.
I went to sign up like a new customer and brought over my $5 Visible line. Everything was going well until I submitted the order and got the "Call to complete the order" message, and I was stuck. I couldn't log into the Metro account because I guess it hadn't actually been created. And I could not start a new order because entering the number to port now said it was no eligible. I think it was stuck in process so I couldn't use it again, and I could see I was charged the $75 even though the order didn't complete.
I finally had to call in and have the rep complete the order for me. He could see my previous online attempt and said the error is something they're seeing a lot of on the site and that he'd just take care of it over the phone. I submitted all my info to him and he did just that.
I just find it odd that I got the error on my first attempt. I used a different credit card and email than I used back in March but all my other personal info and address were the same. I'm in this to get just two iPhone 12s so I hope I don't have to call them again for the second phone.

The number that shows up on the "Please contact us to complete your order" screen, which is 1-888-8-METRO8.
When the guy asked why I was coming to Metro I said because they have the free iPhone deal and he said, "yes, the iPhone 12 deal" and assured me the only charge would be the $75.
Earlier post mentioned that only 1st line needs to open the box and turn on because acct needs codes to verify. All later lines can activate from website directly, switch to other phones and leave the phone unopened, unopened phone still unlocks after 12 month, can anyone confirm it works? I thought phone has to power on in order to register activation date at Apple server

Well I think
Online activation is for metro account
You need to activate the phone to get unlocked from Apple server
Are you trying to port in a number from Google Voice or NumberBarn? If so, that's why.
Yes. I thought google voice has worked before for me. Can't recall what it was or when. I do see a green check mark after entering number verification.

GV is still accepted but you won't get the special price. This changed a month ago. You need to get a number from a "real" provider now.

You can use someone else phone with an available eSIM temporarily. Once ported, you can delete the eSIM from their phone.
