They are physical buttons but act digitally. You can turn off this fan with a smart switch but it won't turn back on without physically pressing the buttons again.
I liked the older version of this model much better which had the physical buttons unfortunately that hasn't been made for well over 10 years at this point.
What I will say about the pricing is that normally when I buy these MSRP is $80 and the sale price tends to be $40.
With all that being said personally this is a pass.
Solid room circulator but very outdated with the smart features. This is not the regular fan where you point at yourself to cool. You put this fan in a corner, point at the ceiling on the opposite corner of the room, and the whole room has moving air, cooling down the entire room. This is the one thing this fan does and the best at it. I have owned this fan since 2015, still running silently. Can't hear the fan at all on medium or low setting. It can push serious amount of air, quietly. The grill is removable for easy cleaning.

The main downfall of this fan is the digital buttons and no remote. First world problem, I know. I don't like that it goes on full blast when you turn it on. To turn it on, you have to physically walk to the fan, bend down, press the on button and quickly press the low button or it'll go on full power automatically. To turn off, you then have to physically walk to the fan, bend down, and press the off button. Sometimes, because the fan is so quiet, you would forget and leave the fan running all night. You can use the built in timer, or a smart switch to schedule and turning off, but you still have to walk to the fan and bend down to turn it on every time.

For the money, I recommend Dreo Pedestal fan. All the smart features you can dream off. My favorite model is the Dreo 513S [amazon.com]. It was on sale for $108 last week on Amazon. Aliexpress has it for $100 shipped every day.

Absolute garbage model.

I would pay for this if it had the physical controls, but because of the digital buttons you can't use this with smartplugs to control ON

Are we looking at the same thing? The link shows that it has 4 physical buttons and not digital.

How is this different to the Lasko box fan from Home Depot for $20?

That one has 1820 CFM, and this one has 584 CFM. Performance wise I'm not seeing any advantage.

Is it just looking better and more compact?

I bought the alexa version of this fan just a little over two years ago for $99.99. The fan has been used daily for up to 10 hours at a time. It is the best fan Ive owned and pushes a lot of air, even at the lower settings. Solid deal.

It's true you can't use with smart plugs to turn on, but this thing is amazing. I purchased it in 2016 and still use it to this day. This model really moves the air around.

How quiet / noisy are these? How does it rate vs a ceiling fan? I like my ceiling fans as a supplement to AC in the summer. But now I'm thinking that a good fan could be just as effective.

Note: 85% of the time the ceiling fan is on low, the other 15%, maybe medium. Rarely high as it's too much air moved.

These will be louder than your ceiling fan. I have 3 models. They are quieter at lower rpms. The bigger fans can get pretty loud on highest setting but your talking about pushing a lot of air. Each model differs. One has remote and the other 2 are physical buttons. I have a 72 inch ceiling fan and use the large fan to supplement on really hot days. Room size is 14x24 with a cathedral ceiling. I am it high up to bounce off the tall wall to help dissipate the heat build up.

This fan is very quiet on low. Barely noticeable. On the higher settings you can definitely hear it but it's not a huge noise. For instance, if you're using a box fan on high, there's too much noise that it interferes with watching TV. But with the vornado, it doesn't disrupt you. I rarely use speed 3 and basically never use speed 4 (the strongest and loudest). 4 is pretty loud, but again, the "tone" of the fan isn't unbearable.
I bought this fan for exactly why you are looking at it. It performed better than my expectations, and in a large room. It's primarily the only one I use now. My only complaint is that there's no timer/sleep function like on some of their other fans, It does have a "memory" so you can just turn it on and it will be at the speed it was when you turned it off.

Additional note. comparing to a ceiling fan it works far better because it truly circulates the air in the room. Think of it as a rock in a lake. it'll make ripples out everywhere, but only strong at the source. that's the ceiling fan. The vornado is more like a wave that pushes across the room and creates a current. It's a night and day difference.

This is exactly what I was just thinking after seeing the CFM

This is good for rooms which you want to circulate air but cannot or will not install a ceiling fan. So I'd compare its cost to a ceiling fan.
