Noob question: what is the advantage of this compared to just buy a dedicated WiFi router for like $15-20 in the previous deals.
That's what I did. Bought a $18 Netgear R6700X and dedicated it to my headset. Works fantastic.
In theory I could see reasons this could be better if you only ever do PCVR, but that is the exception for me so it'd be annoying to wake up my PC just to get internet for my headset.
Whoa, I think I need this, is this all I'll need to do PCVR? Meta site is suspiciously lacking in details, for example is this all I need to run half life alyx?

Yeah as long as your PC has a wired ethernet connection already.
I went the route of buying a dedicated wifi 6 router for my laptop to run Air Link but that ended up a little complicated because of the internet connection issue (i have to play ethernet port roulette to start games). This USB router seems like it would avoid that

the main differences I'm seeing in reviews are that a wall mounted line of sight wifi router has better overall connection quality, and will give you internet also. this doesn't seem to act as a wifi hotspot for the quest, only airlink, so if you want to update games, shop, browse the web, anything on the quest in standalone, you need to disconnect from it and connect to a different hotspot.
I would also doubt the connection quality across rooms. I got a cheapo wifi 6 router with a quad array of four antennas that stick out of it for $40-ish bucks and wall mounted it, and I can do airlink/steam link/ wireless virtual desktop in every room directly around this one even without line of sight just fine, no extra latency. I don't think the antenna in this would hold up as well.
one thing to always keep in mind with budget wireless devices is you're basically connecting a great point of attack to your network though. firmware updates aren't always available on day zero or ever at all.

The Air Link has been horrible on my Quest 3, have switched to Virtual Desktop ever since.

I mean...even if one only uses PCVR, wouldn't a router+VD do most of what this device does and a lot more?
