I'm typing my message on this exact Chromebook. I bought it for $250 back in the summer. It has been great, though as mentioned above, a backlit keyboard would be nice.

It comes with a year of Gemini Advanced and 2 TB of storage. When I tried to activate the offer, I got a cryptic message about my account not being eligible. After a useless exchange with Google Support that took over a week, they ended by saying the device was not eligible. English comprehension ain't their strong suit! I finally figured out that it was because my Google account was part of a Google Family group. I had to disassociate the account to activate the trial.

You can re-create the Family Group after activating the trial and share the 2 TB. I saw a message that you can only do this once a year. It looks like they updated and clarified the terms of the offer to mention the problem I encountered.

Recommended. I installed their Linux support and can run Signal Desktop, Brave and Reaper in that environment.

On the question about media, the internal speakers don't get too loud, but they're fine along with the mic for Google Voice calls. The headphone jack works well with my KRK headphones, plenty of volume and clear. I can cast from Chrome, YouTube and YouTube Music to my TV with Chromecast built-in.

Brightness is fine for indoors. I lower the brightness at night. Probably 200 or 250 nits.

As a device for my elderly mother-in-law, I think Chromebooks are great. I used to get calls about malicious pop-ups and error messages all the time with Windows 10. With a Chromebook, I maybe get a call every 6 months or so. Best Christmas gift we could have gotten her (to preserve my sanity).

Not black at all. Solid gray (RGB 119, 119, 109 by spot measurement, Gray Family "Camouflage green", but I don't see any green). The external hard drive above is black and the envelope below is white. The gray triangle is about the same shade as the dust on the black that's not very apparent in person, but on the photo, stark comparison between dusty gray and clean under yellow Post-it note.
Thanks, repped!

I am trying to generate a code myself but I have given away all my chrome books to friends / family. Anyone know if you can spoof the browser / user agent? I tried but did not receive a code.

It's relatively easy to get Linux running on this Chromebook (you don't even need to open the case or get any special cables)
(This is not a one step process, and you will need some knowledge of shell commands and Linux systems to do this)
1. Enter recovery mode (esc + refresh + power)
2. Enable developer mode (Ctrl + D)
This will wipe all of your data
https://docs.mrchromebox.tech/doc...loper.html
3. When you get to the Developer Mode boot menu, press enter or Ctrl + D to boot into ChromeOS
4. Connect to the internet and set up ChromeOS with an account
5. Log out and open the VT-2 shell: Ctrl + Alt + Refresh, and login as chronos
I would recommend setting a password for chronos at this point
6. Run MrChromebox's firmware utility script
https://docs.mrchromebox.tech/docs/fwscript.html
7. Install the RW_LEGACY firmware (option 1), and reboot
8. Create a bootable linux USB (Fedora KDE 41 works great) and insert it
9. When the device boots up, press Ctrl + L
If this doesn't work, select "Select alternate bootloader" and choose "edk2"
10. As soon as you see the rabbit logo, press Esc and choose your Linux USB
11. Once you get into your distro's live environment, do not begin installation just yet - you need to make ChromeOS's partition smaller
12. In a terminal, install your distro's "vboot-utils" package (needed for crap)
13. Download crap: https://github.com/chrultrabook/crap and run it with sudo
14. Make the ChromeOS partition as small as you like
15. Proceed with your distro's installation. You can use the existing EFI partition (nvme0n1p5) as ChromeOS doesn't use it
16. Once you finish, reboot and boot into Linux by pressing Ctrl + L on the boot screen
17. Fix USB-C and audio: https://docs.chrultrabook.com/doc...html#linux

Above will allow dual boot ChromeOS+Linux. Since this is n305, the SOC power itself is pretty low, and its easy to get 8+ hrs battery life on Linux

Anybody can chime in about All State warranty from Costco for this Chromebook? Is it necessary due to some issues that some mentioned before i.e. booting without plug-in? TIA!

This is the diamond path. The upside is that you're truly bypassing ChromeOS and running Linux on the bare metal hardware as you would with most any other Windows PC.

However, for those simply hoping to run the occaisional Linux app or command line, and who don't mind doing so as a virtual machine within ChromeOS, the steps for enabling Linux is this way are as trivial as a single settings button: see here [chromeos.dev].

Good luck!
Jon

I agree, but what I was trying to share with my instructions are
- How easy it is to install Linux native now on modern Chromebooks
- It is refreshing to see how user friendly Linux distros have become. E.g touchscreen "just worked", printer driver installation took seconds..
For $175, we get a proper 8-core DDR5, 512M pcie SSD, 14" IPS 1080p laptop with 8 hours battery life, and no spyware/tracking etc. Maybe there are other folks out there like me who want to try this out, and didn't really get this for ChromeOS. Have fun!
Will this finally be the age of Linux on laptops ? Smilie
