ROFL Seattle-> Chicago is $2400 with the discount and it takes 90hrs RT (and if past experience is anything to go by +50% to the timeline.) This is why people fly.
You're right that trains in the US aren't for speed or cost. But this isn't like a Greyhound bus. People don't take these trains to get from point A to point B. Many of the train routes have incredible scenery and people enjoy the experience. There's a big train travel culture out there. YT has many uploads of people vlogging their train trips.
2024 and we still don't have bullet trains in this country because the airlines lobby to keep it that way.

Japan has had bullet trains since the 1960s without a single fatality

Seems to choke at the point of selecting the fare type for each segment when I try booking an example trip.

Edit: My bad. Have not used this before. Looks like you have to click "Add" for each segment once you choose a fare class.

wtf do you enter code? i see a discount clickable in cart but not able to enter anything where it shows "Promo code".

without any promo code, $1800+ from Philly to Miami rtt for a roomette? so I have to spend 26hrs each way en route and pay that much?

They really need an updated booking system, when days the trains leave, cheaper fair dates, I mean if I had to wait a week or 2 for a roomette I would for a better discounted fair. I also saw the older cars had kinda trashy rooms, and the updated / remodeled cars where much nicer. Last note, which I am not sure about is I heard the roomette don't have door locks, so leaving your stuff in the room can be an issue.

Don't apologize, unfortunately there is nothing user friendly about their website.

The government likes to throw away money on programs that perform poorly. It's the American way.

Most of the trains in Japan aren't government owned and they are cheap, fast, and reliable. Basically the gold standard for the world.

If America could privatize it and still have some government control without people calling it overreach that would be great.
