ROFL Seattle-> Chicago is $2400 with the discount and it takes 90hrs RT (and if past experience is anything to go by +50% to the timeline.) This is why people fly.
You're right that trains in the US aren't for speed or cost. But this isn't like a Greyhound bus. People don't take these trains to get from point A to point B. Many of the train routes have incredible scenery and people enjoy the experience. There's a big train travel culture out there. YT has many uploads of people vlogging their train trips.
2024 and we still don't have bullet trains in this country because the airlines lobby to keep it that way.

Japan has had bullet trains since the 1960s without a single fatality

Many years ago my employer offered some perks at work thing where they put transit money into an account every month. It later bought a nice Amtrak vacation. Worth maybe looking into if you have "transit money"

Any good overnight routes from kalispell MT?
Wow I did not know it went to Kalispell. Looking to visit my daughter and family and grand kids who live there in December, but I will most likely fly. Now I need to find a place to stay. Good to know as it might be a fun trip, via train, if I did not have to work.

I also was flabbergasted when looking at the prices. It's cheaper to fly in almost every circumstance it looked like AND it's way slower. So many more hours of travel.

No way! Never in my life will I be seen doing this! lol

maybe it's necessary, but what always got me is if you have 2 adults and a 2 year old child it made you get two private rooms.

I think it's just worth noting people doing this are mostly doing it for the experience of the train and not the cost/time.

For some, the journey matters more than where they go, and that's ok.

Blackouts really kill it, sadly. And their site still functions worse than a startup ULCC airline...le sigh.

But NOT taking the train probably saved me $2k and 4 days out of my life vs driving and Airbnb. Or flying and renting a car Smilie
When self driving cars really take off, trains are all but dead. I'd rather nap in my car and get there in less than half the time than spend a ridiculous amount of money to get crammed into a tiny cubicle on a train.

Yeah as a parent with a small child I wondered about this when I looked into train travel. Will they kick you out of your roomette if you booked your child an adult general fare ticket and simply brought them in with you?

Does this work on the bedroom? I see the accessible one mentioned but I imagine it is for people with disabilities...
