This was identical to the Pixel 9 promotion they ran. You pay tax on any amount remaining after the trade-in credit. In this case it was $0, so no tax.

My iPhone 13 Pro Max wasn't being used so all the data was already wiped. They factory reset it just to make sure iCloud lock was removed.
i placed an order for pickup but its showing tax on the full amount
does the tax reduce or is completely removed after the trade finishes?

Verizon will give you $1,000 for any working phone towards S24 Ultra or iPhone 16 Pro but that's $33.33/mo over 36 months, so not a deal for 90% of people on SD unless you're trading in something like an iPhone 7+ ($100 value or less) or something similar for $1,000.
