Some of HD's buy one get one deals include the new 8Ah XR POWERPACK (DCB2108) as a free gift. For the lowest price do the following:
  • Follow the link and select the TOUGHSYSTEM 2.0 FLEXVOLT... as the main item
  • The total price for both items will be $199 (free shipping or store pickup)
  • The battery should each price out at $104.26 (and the worklight at $94.74)
This is the lowest I have seen this battery for. The lowest slickdeal I saw before now was $150. If you plan to keep both the battery and tool, note that there are other options over at Lowes for $199 for the battery and tool, but this is the regular 8Ah battery, not the POWERPACK.

I guess i'm just wondering if the average homeowner doing average homeowner tasks would actually notice a difference? Because having more torque in my screwgun when i'm not doing much more with it than putting in a couple wood screws in a few times a year doesn't really matter, ya know?
You would not notice a marked difference unless you are using hi c-rate tools like saws/etc and even there we are talking at the limits. Otherwise go about your day getting deals w/ basic XR batteries. Even on saws yes they can bog a bit but if you are ripping or cutting wood 1x a year the extra 5-10 seconds is irrelevant.

These newer batteries ARE better for pro/prosumer and especially high torque/hi c-rate where time=money but for the average DIY basic is AOK unless you want an expensive trophy case. I say let the pros pay and the benefits roll down to the plebs in a few years. I still have XR batteries going strong from 2016, because I no longer make money and I simply don't use them enough to kill the nominal SOC.

In fact I find that 95% of the time (if not more) my m12 do the duty they are lighter, and are easier to maneuver. I even question still keeping a drill around. I started selling off my 20V tools.

If your use case doesn't warrant a high-output premium battery, then it makes total sense to go for a standard battery. That's why many manufacturers, including DeWalt, make parallel lines of batteries with redundant Ah capacities.

Would this be worth it to simply run the work fan? Even my 5Ah only lasts maybe 8 hours on the higher settings, and I use it sometimes in a camping tent over a weekend or overnight or to help dry paint, so the runtime would help.

One of the big positives of this battery is the capability of high output currents for higher draw tools. It will work, but won't be very economical as far as price. If you have other tools like saws or impacts this will give them a little more oomph and give a longer runtime for the fan.

I think at this price I would recommend the 9ah flexvolt at Home Depot, slightly more expensive, slightly higher AH, will work with 60V tools also, and worth a bit more.
Could always pick up an 8ah (non-powerpack) or 10ah on marketplace for around $10/AH if not worried too much about warranty, although they MIGHT warranty if production date is under 3 years.
