You take the bits out of the straight line holder you see in the packaging for this dewalt and can store the bits inside the handle. The picture is hard to see but it says on handle bit storage.
I have this and would not recommend it. It isn't terrible, but the ratcheting reversal switch REQUIRES 2 hands. It's way too stiff to just choke up on the handle and finagle the mechanism. Also, the telescoping neck has some slop, but it's tolerable.
The main knock against it is that every time I think the telescoping feature would be handy, the added girth from the bit holder in the tip got in the way more often than not.
I have both of these and you are correct, the stubby has storage in the handle, the telescopic does not have storage.

No i bought both and the Craftsman is hands down better. I reluctantly purchased the Craftsman and it actually pretty dam good. The bits also hid away unlike the dewalt. You will have to plastic baggie the dewalts.

Anyone have a recommendation of this vs the Craftsman V-Series (link) vs the Craftsman SpeedDrive (link)?
I had an old version of the speeddrive, which was much bulkier. It has it's place, but at first I hated it.
When you engage the speed feature you lose all torque. It wasn't 'less' torque - if there was any resistance, forget about it. In order to drive anything in, you have to have some pressure to prevent cam out, but if that pressure wasn't perfectly perpendicular and I was also pushing slightly off center, the added friction between the spinning collar/part and the handle made it impossible to turn. So, I would have to delicately balance between downward pressure on the screws to prevent cam out, while pushing lightly enough to avoid binding the spinning part.
It shines with machine bolts and pre-threaded stuff. You'll still need to switch to slow mode for that final 1/2 turn of decent torque, but you can always drive a bunch a screws in and go back to tighten them all at once to avoid switching modes constantly. In that case, it's pretty fun to use.
It did last a while and was easy to disassemble when there got to be tool much play in the mechanism. Again, this was the old version, but lasted a good 10 years of light-moderate use.
In all, if you're trying to avoid carrying a battery powered screwdriver/driver/drill, it's an okay option. I wouldn't buy another one, but I wouldn't return it if I got it as a present.
The V-series looks more useful to me. Seems like the exact opposite of the speeddrive - speeddrive for speeding up light work, v-series for for speeding up hard work.

I've had this for a few years, and it no longer telescopes anyone have any suggestions on freeing up the telescoping mechanism?
How odd... I thought I'd take a look at mine to see if there was some obvious place things could bind up... and discovered that mine won't retract either! It must have literally happened today when putting together some shelves.
I'll see what I can do tomorrow. I don't want to wake everyone up banging on stuff at 2am.
edit: Did a quick Google to see if there was anything obvious, but nope. I did find that it has a 2.7 star rating on DeWalt's own site, lol.

Good news! I got mine working again. I tried a bunch of stuff, but all it took was smacking the collar with a hammer. I didn't even have to brace it.
Just hold the screwdriver at a comfortable angle and strike the black knurled collar towards the handle while you turn the screwdriver. If you're worried about hitting your hand, you're doing it right! I didn't have to hit it hard, but got to the point of thinking, "Okay, this is a stupid way to get hurt. Maybe I should put this in a vice." Took 5 hits hard enough to scrape the paint, but not enough to bend anything. So, if holding it doesn't work for you, try bracing it in a vice and maybe using a second screwdriver with a flat head to direct the force.
