I initially bought this for my 6 year old. The rod is ok but the reel is plastic junk. I ended up getting him a Zebco Hotcast 4'6" rod @ Walmart for 6 bucks, and added a Proficiency micro-sized spincast reel (the one that comes in the 2 pack with a full-sized reel). Great combo, albeit more expensive than this.
